Songs mentioning the Pogues

Post Sun Apr 18, 2010 4:50 pm

So, how many songs are there that at least mention the Pogues or referenece them?
I can only think of two others:
Shane's Dentist - Mojo Nixon
some Black 47 song mentions somebody who used to do something for the Pogues. Hell, it's been so long since I gave that album a listen, I wouldn't have a clue anymore.

"

well Cagliostro,

there must be loads, might be interesting to hear some suggestion, MIGHT BE A NEW TOPIC altogether

there's this nice song in the Dutch language by a band called ROWWEN HEZE simply entitled SHANE,
about how he turns up hours late at a gig and how no-one couldn't care less once he starts singing ..

I know there's a Mahones song where singer/songwriter Finy McConnel mentions drinking with Shane

I wrote this verse as part of a song Ceili Family are working on:

"On my way to heaven, there was St Peter at the gate
he looked a little puzzled, then had mercy on my fate
inside I met my Maker, he was a fairly friendly guy
but low on serving pints, my mouth got almighty dry
We laughed about my sins, I told Him a few jokes
we also sang some songs, He even liked The Pogues
but then He started preaching, He said I should drink no more
I didn't like His teaching, so I headed for the door"

sure there's more

and there's this brilliant song FALL FACE FIRST by the Ceili Family !

it doesn't mention the Pogues, but tells a story from a Shane biography, from the time he worked as a barkeeper in some London pub, when there was this man that drank so much in so little time, that him reaching the door was met by a round of applause from the other punters
didn't make it far past the door though ..

does that song count too ?
check it out anyway !

Fran Moran, who runs the excellent Poguetry site, once tried to compile a list of songs / books etc. which mention Shane and the Pogues. It can be found HERE. Sadly, it has not been updated for years.

The English band Yeti recorded a song titled "Shane MacGowan":

Shane, Shane, Shane, MacGowan!
Hissing like a big bad snake
He's Shane MacGowan!
He's Shane MacGowan!

So put another log on the fire,
Shane's gonna get much higher
He's Shane MacGowan!

1, 2, 3, 4,
Oh my lord there's a knock on the door!
It's Shane!
He's lean again!

So put another log on the fire,
Shane's gonna get much higher
He's Shane MacGowan!

Big fat Shane.
Shane, Shane, Shane, MacGowan!

Then he put on a stone top hat,
And was sick all over the cat!
He took one more
And he's down on the floor
But he 'aint going out like that!
He's Shane MacGowan!
He's Shane MacGowan!

So put another log on the fire,
Shane's gonna get much higher
He's Shane MacGowan!

5, 6, 7, 8,
It takes 9 lives just to stay awake
He's Shane,
And he's lean again!

He's Shane MacGowan!
He's Shane MacGowan!

So put another log on the fire,
Shane's gonna get much higher
He's Shane MacGowan!
Big fat Shane.
Shane, Shane, Shane, MacGowan!
Big fat Shane.
Shane, Shane, Shane, MacGowan!

the other day, I wrote these words below,
any band up to make them into a song ??

check www.myspace.com/dutchirishbastard for this project FOR THE HELL OF IT,
various bands around the globe involved in putting words by me to music

My favourite whiskey, and my favourite Pogues cd

© PaddyGoesDutch aka DutchIrishBastard

When I was a kid, I grew up happy and carefree
but as I became older, my parents grew tired of me
so I left the house, but made sure I did carry
both my favourite whiskey, and my favourite Pogues cd

Once I broke my neck, and was in hospital you see
the doctors were all nice, the nurses took well care of me
but after a few days, I was homesick as could be
for my favourite whiskey, and my favourite Pogues cd

Time off for myself, is enough to feel real free
holidays abroad, they are not the thing for me
I’d rather stay at home, cause that’s the place to be
with my favourite whiskey, and my favourite Pogues cd

Once my house it was on fire, smoke was all that I could see
man that sure was mighty scary, panic took control of me
but when I had calmed down, I knew my priority
was to save my favourite whiskey, and my favourite Pogues cd

I was never keen on women, preferred to booze and to be free
till I saw this pretty lassie, who madly fell in love with me
but she met this other bloke, big and tall and strong was he
so I took my favourite whiskey, and my favourite Pogues cd

I am bloody scared of sailing, I am a landlubber you see
sailing haunts me in my sleep, it just is not the thing for me
in my worst nightmare a ship, sinks to the bottom of the sea
with my favourite whiskey, and my favourite Pogues cd

When I leave this world, I go to heaven certainly
never met one who has been there, but it sounds good enough for me
no single wish goes unfulfilled, so I am certain there to see
lots of my favourite whiskey, and my favourite Pogues cd
lots of my favourite whiskey, and my favourite Pogues cd
In heaven I met my Maker, I told Him a few jokes
we also sang some songs, He even liked The Pogues

is an interesting angle, had the opportunity to talk to the Black 47 frontman Larry Kirwam once (in Belfast after a gig), he seemed to take pride to be part of the tradition of Irishness despite Shane and The Pogues, claiming he started out at the same time or even earlier.
Great guy and great band nonetheless.

let's check these lyrics mate

GRAND, thanks for that

but sure, list must be longer

it mentions the MAHONES song I hinted at,
it was very instructive, I know the song well and always thought they sang:
"Mahones and MacGowan, rock the USA", not Ramones and MacGowan,
but there you go, learning all the time ..
more modest guy than I thought, this Finny McConnel :-)

mentions the BLACK 47 quote too,
but frankly, that is more about Frank Murray than about the Pogues
In heaven I met my Maker, I told Him a few jokes
we also sang some songs, He even liked The Pogues
