Hank Williams III

Post Wed Sep 16, 2009 1:44 pm

First off, I was very surprised to not find a thread for Hank III. After decades of Shania Twain-Toby Keith- Dixie Chicks wankery the man is the very clearly the greatest thing to happen to country music in recent years.

Secondly, his hardcore-punk side project, Assjack, has finally found a release and it is fucking burningly quality fantastic.

Sometimes I think I actually prefer his work to his Grandad's. Well, no, that's not true. But he's really up there.

It's been a while, I've seen him three times. His second tour was the best. I thought they would make an excellent opening band for one of the east or west coast tours. I wasn't aware he was touring again. I'd see him again. :)

I'd put him (in his country set up) in the same genre as Justin Townes Earle, who is opening for some of the Pogues north american tour.

He did a couple of gigs in London at the Garage in Islington about a fortnight ago, I went to the Sunday night show. First he and his band played a countryish set, then some Hellbilly (hardcore but with banjo, pedal steel etc) followed by a set by his hardcore band Assjack.

I love his song Country Heroes:

2 weeks ago I went to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville and they had a special exhibit called Family Tradition which featured Hank Williams, Junior and Hank III. Only one case of Hank III stuff but I got a kick out of seeing an AssJack poster in the Country Music Hall of Fame. My favorite part of the exhibit was Hank III's well abused cowboy boots wrapped in duct tape that he wore for every performance from age 15 to January of 2008.

Side Note: saw instruments used by Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, Jimmy Rogers and Dr. Ralph Stanley among others yet inexplicably the Good Doctor Stanley has not yet been honored with his own plaque in the Hall of Fame, WTF?

You're not alone. My sister had just seen him in Berlin and called me to say, Go!!! and I couldn't make it, so yes, annoying.
Hope it was a success and he'll come back.

He did said that it was the first time he had played a gig in London in about twelve years.

Heads up for Smerker/James and Christine (and anyone else who didn't make it to Hank III's last London gig), I have just noticed that his website shows that he will be playing at the Electric Ballroom next week, Weds 20th June along with a few other British/European gigs:

Smoz - many thanks for the heads up! Tickets in hand... I'm very curious. Quite possibly a four-hour affair?

When I saw him in 2009 he did three sets, get there early. I won't be able to make it to the gig tonight, any chance of you doing a brief review?
