Pete Seeger Turning 90 With Concert Celebrations

American music legend Pete Seeger turns 90 on May 3, but the celebrations honoring his musical legacy and social activism will go on throughout the year.

Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, the environmental group founded by Seeger in the 1960s, is marking the birthday and its own 40th anniversary with a series of concerts in the spring and summer.

Wilco's Jeff Tweedy will play a rare acoustic solo set at Clearwater's annual "Spring Splash" fundraiser in Beacon, N.Y. on March 28. Tweedy and Seeger will perform together at this sold out event.

Blues singer Susan Tedeschi, folk hero Arlo Guthrie, “newgrass” sensations Old Crow Medicine Show and Alejandro Escovedo are some of the artists headlining the annual Clearwater Festival in Croton, N.Y. on June 20-21. The Persuasions, indie favorites Dr. Dog and Elvis Perkins in Dearland, New Pornographers frontman A.C. Newman, and Allison Moorer are among the dozens of other performers announced today on the festival's website.

Seeger will be performing numerous times during the two-day festival, and his grandson (and frequent collaborator) Tao Rodriguez-Seeger will also play a set with his band.

On May 3, Seeger's actual 90th birthday, the folk music icon will be feted with a birthday party at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, and Steve Earle are among the artists who will appear alongside Seeger at the concert.

All of the money raised at the events support Clearwater’s environmental research, education and advocacy efforts to help preserve and protect the Hudson River.

Asked last year by Billboard what his legacy will be, Seeger replied, "My family will remember me, and a few others. I'm one of a lot of songwriters. There'll be more important things to think about."

My grandpa always used to tell me Pete Seeger was worthless by virtue of being a "goddamned communiss."

But as far as people who are cool just because they're "living history," Pinetop Perkins has Seeger whooped. That guy knew every big bluesman ever and plays a mean ass boogie-woogie piano. Like 96 years old, I think.

Waxies is just one variation of a tune which appears in a variety of forms in the British Isles and shows up again during the American Civil War. The same is true of, for instance, "The Bard of Armagh" which turns up again as "The Streets of Laredo" and other songs. Soldiers were an important conduit in the development of folk music in North America, as they made up new songs from old tunes from the Old Country. Apart from the obvious fact that this minimised the skills needed for musical composition, the results tended to ring with an authentic built-in melancholy.

As a wee lad,i remember listening to PETE SEEGER on Chidrens Favurites on the old.BBC LIGHT programme singing Little Boxes!A lot of leftfield folkies used to have their music played on this programme,hosted by Uncle MAC.Changing the subject,am i the first person to mention legendary 60s American folk singer-songwriter JACKSON C. FRANK in this forum?His one and only album ,released in 1965 is awesome!

Yes indeed........Burl Ives, Julie Felix, Theodore Bikel, Julie Andrews with Moondog...........all revolutionaries smuggled into Children's Favourites on the pretext of performing kiddies songs. "Puff The Magic Dragon" was my gateway song to hard drugs at the age of 7.

Little Boxes is/was the theme song for Weeds (a program on Showtime). They used the original for the first season, then switched to having a different cover each week. They did this for season 2 & 3. There are some really entertaining covers of this song.

This reminds me of Sesame Street, who had Pete Seeger & other blacklisted artists on performer "kids" music. Heck, they hired Buffy Saint Marie on for 4 years! My introduction to most of those artists. But i wasn't led to drugs (well, not by Sesame Street at least); they told me to "put DOWN that duckie!"
