That got me thinking about my old friend, the late
Hot Press writer Bill Graham. To describe him as the finest rock journalist Ireland ever produced is a bit like saying Mozart was a gifted tunesmith, but Bill himself would be too interested in joining the musical dots - to uncover the crazy and ever-expanding canvas of Irish and Irish-inspired music- to be bothered by such trivia. A really fascinating man, he could convince you, quite easily, that the Undertones were, at heart, a great Country band, though I never met anyone who was
quite capable of nutshelling or paraphrasing Bill's logic the next day. I took Bill to his first ever Pogues gig, in the Bull and Gate in Kentish Town, about 1983 I think. He practically
squealed at the interconnectedness of it all.
In any event, when asked once by another journalist how he kept his ear to the ground in divining current and future trends in Irish music, he said simply "I read the Musicians Wanted ads in
Hot Press".
