The Mighty Regis - Pogues and Dropkicks covers in L.A.

The Mighty Regis Irish Show Band from Co. Sligo perform every Thursday at Molly Malone's (home to Cranky George and birthplace of Flogging Molly). Their sets include covers of The Pogues' "Boys From The County Hell" and Dropkick Murphys' "I'm Shipping Up To Boston," along with their own brand of Irish-inspired punk.

Guitarist wanted for Celtic Punk band in L.A.

Post Tue Feb 10, 2009 3:30 am

Cheers from THE MIGHTY REGIS, the Irish show band from Co. Sligo, now based in Los Angeles. We're currently in the market for a lead guitarist to start in a fill-in capacity with potential for more. Money is not there yet, but we gig quite a bit, including a residency at Molly Malone's (birthplace of Flogging Molly and stopping ground for Mr. Fearnley's Cranky George). Influences include The Pogues, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, The Dubliners, Johnny Cash, The Clash. We even cover "Boys From The County Hell," "Dirty Old Town," "Repeal of the Licensing Laws," and "Fairytale" come Xmas time.

Please send me a P.M. if interested, and I apologize if this is the incorrect forum for this.

Cheers,
Paddy (accordion)

That got me thinking about my old friend, the late Hot Press writer Bill Graham. To describe him as the finest rock journalist Ireland ever produced is a bit like saying Mozart was a gifted tunesmith, but Bill himself would be too interested in joining the musical dots - to uncover the crazy and ever-expanding canvas of Irish and Irish-inspired music- to be bothered by such trivia. A really fascinating man, he could convince you, quite easily, that the Undertones were, at heart, a great Country band, though I never met anyone who was quite capable of nutshelling or paraphrasing Bill's logic the next day. I took Bill to his first ever Pogues gig, in the Bull and Gate in Kentish Town, about 1983 I think. He practically squealed at the interconnectedness of it all.

In any event, when asked once by another journalist how he kept his ear to the ground in divining current and future trends in Irish music, he said simply "I read the Musicians Wanted ads in Hot Press".

I never would have guessed that my silly little post would elicit an eloquent reminder of friends past. I'm honored we could bring your mate to mind, Mr. Chevron.
