THE BAD SHEPHERDS

Was reading The Independent (12 DECEMBER 2008) and came across an article about the BAD SHEPHERDS. Adrian Edmondson (Vyvyan Basterd) is a member of the band and if I remember correctly he has had some Pogues connections. I think he directed the video to Fiesta and also there was some Pogues involvement in the Comic Strips films. Anyway I suppose this has kind off been done before, about 26 years ago at the Pindar Of Wakefield but it certainly sounds like a band Pogues fans could be interested in. I wondered whether anyone has seen them live? They are playing in Putney on Monday night which I can't make but I guess the fact that there is a gig in Brixton on Thursday night which I can very much make more than makes up for this!!

WHAT ARE THE BAD SHEPHERDS?

The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because we really like the noise. We think the songs are better songs than people remember. We love folk instruments. It works. We do songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others, even Kraftwerk! Alright, they’re not all punk, but they come from roughly the same era. We’ve mostly given the songs a kind of Celtic feel, and we’ve stuck in the odd reel and jig here and there. But occassionally we just thrash… I’ve always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the excitement of watching punk live in the 70’s.

Yeh, I grew up with them...Bottom was better, though!

The Bad Shepherds are pretty good, though. Their cover of I Fought the Law is great!

Yep..watched 'em to death. And 'Filthy, Rich and Catflap'..and Bottom...the best of the three was F,R &C..only six episodes made..got it on dvd.

Seeing these guys in a couple of weeks. They're headlining one of the stages on the opening night of the Cambridge Folk Festival. Should be fun. Except it always, always rains on the opening night.

It was fun. Good live act, and plenty of opportunity for singing along with one's punk/post-punk favourites from back in the day. They're sort of reminiscent of Hayseed Dixie, who've done this sort of thing for a while now (and if you've never heard Hayseed Dixie's cover of "Ace Of Spades" you should). I'd go and see them live again. Not sure, to be honest, if I'd buy the CD, though I might be persuaded otherwise. (Sorry, Ade Edmondson, if you are reading this! )
