The Wages of Sin

Post Thu Nov 20, 2008 8:18 pm

Pardon the shameless plug, but The Wages of Sin have a new CD out called "Gringo Mariachi" - 13 tracks of prime USDA punk-rock sea shanties and Appalachian death polka (including the best banjo/fiddle/mandolin-powered cover of "White Riot" you've heard in a while :P )!

Our producer once described us as "An American version of the Pogues, with more murder"... I don't know that we can rightly stake a claim to that kind of greatness, but hopefully you'll like it.

You can hear us on myspace: http://myspace.com/thewagesofsin

And you can listen to (and, ahem, purchase) both our CDs on CD Baby:
http://cdbaby.com/cd/wagesofsin2 (Gringo Mariachi)
http://cdbaby.com/cd/wagesofsin (Custom of the Sea)

You can also check out some live footage and one seriously goofy video on youtube:

Enjoy.
cheers,

Interesting stuff. Thanks for the link.

Are all the songs sea shanty and/or "Arrrr, pirate" style?

No, we actually have a pretty diverse sound (if I do say so myself...) with a bunch of traditional American influences in addition to the Celtic and nautical-type sounds. We do enjoy a bit of the pirate-y stuff but realized early on we didn't want to get pegged as a novelty band... the video (which is from 2005 or so) is probably the last real 'pirate' thing we've done.

Cheers for that, Philip! I grew up with a lot of traditional music (my parents were heavily into folk & trad sounds, and my dad is a pretty decent guitar/banjo picker), but it wasn't until a friend handed me a cassette of 'Rum, Sodomy & The Lash' in 1990 that the lightbulb went on. Hope to see the Pogues (with Philip Chevron this time!) in Seattle again -- be sure to ring us if you need an opener  :P
cheers,

yo. I was checkin' out your links...really cool stuff.

I was wondering...how long have y'all been together? I'm from Friday Harbor (been in Hawaii 5 years) and use to frequent the city...but I don't remember your band. I would have sought you out for sure...did I just miss the boat? Maybe this info is somewhere in the links...but...ya know....I'm lazy.

look forward to getting yer cd(s). Thanks for the post.

Welcome to The Raft.

Our first show was October 2003... so probably right when you moved to Hawaii.

all I've got is Apple Bannana's...oranges....coconuts....and frozen mango's.....but no Ladies Fingers (apple is better anyway)

Aren't the men in charge of dinner on this Raft?? If not...then I'm gonna have to bail. If it wasn't for food prepared by someone other than myself...I would never get out of bed!

Thanks JS for the response. I checked your MS page. If you don't accept my friend request I'm gonna make you walk the plank...
