I have a bootleg from his Hamburg show in January 2004 which he opened with a beautiful ballad-like version of "If I should fall". I´m going to see Mr Earle on February 7th in Hamburg and I really hope he´ll play it again.

I went to see Steve Earle last night. Support act was his wife, the beatifulk and beautifully voiced Allison Moorer. Steve´s show was a bit mixed. The first 9 songs were great, but then he was joined by some sort of DJ who did some loops and samples and some scratching. All in all he stayed on for 11 songs, of which there were only three who worked (City of Immigrants, Steve´s hammer and Satellite radio).
Here´s the complete set list (the DJ songs are indicated with *):
1. Steve´s last ramble
2. The devil´s right hand
3. My old friend the blues
4. Someday
5. Now she´s gone
6. Goodbye
7. Tom Ames` prayer
8. South Nashville Blues
9. Billy Austin
10. Tennessee blues*
11. Hericho Road*
12. Oxycontin Blues*
13. CCKMP (Cocaine cannot kill my pain)*
14. Transcendental Blues*
15. Sparkle and shine
16. Days aren´t long enough (feat. Allison Moorer)
17. Down here below* (feat. Allison Moorer)
18. City of immigrants*
19. The truth*
20. Galway girl
21. Steve´s hammer*
22. Satellite radio*
23. Way down in the hole*

24. Jerusalem
25. Rex´s blues
26. Ft. Worth Blues
27. Copperhead Road

I'm glad I saw Steve with the Dukes.

They are one rockin' combo.

They're to Steve like Crazy Horse is to Neil Young.

I'm hoping this DJ crap is just Steve going through his Trans
period. I'd sure like to see him rawk again.

I saw Steve three times before - the first time with the McCourys, and they did a fantastic 3 hours bluegrass show. The other two shows were with the Dukes, totally different animal, but they were really rocking. I was really looking forward to hearing just him and his guitar as I had missed his 2002 tour but managed to get hold of a bootleg of his Hamburg show which is great (not only because he started the show with "If I should fall".

I, too, hope that this DJ stuff will quickly go away. And never come back.

Yes, Mr. Earle for "Washington Square Serenade."

And a shout out for Levon Helm.....Best Traditional Folk Album, for "Dirt Farmer."

It´s good that Mr Earle now gets the recognition he deserves. But I´m not sure if I´d given him a grammy for "Washington Square Serenade". To me it´s his weakest album to date (and a bit of a disappointment after the strong "The revolution starts ... now").

I have to agree.

I suppose he's happy, and his happiness has contributed to a loss of (what I can only describe as) his edge. Well, he's entitled to experiment. And I'm glad for him, it's about time. But when he becomes aware again, I hope I'm there.

Hah! At least Neil had an excuse (wanting to spend his time at home, helping raise his kids full-time). What's Steve's excuse? Too happy? I have to agree that i'm not a big fan of this album, and Steve has produced very little studio output that i don't like. I mean, it's not bad, but not much jumps out at me.

His solo, mellow version of If I Should Fall From Grace remains the only cover i've ever heard that i've really liked. I mean, how could you compete with the original? Change it entirely, of course.

Anybody notice who the Dukes' axeman of the last 10 years is? Eric "Rosco" Amble was the original guitarist in The Blackhearts, as in Joan Jett & the BLackhearts. No wonder he's so damn good. Hope i get to see 'em together again some time soon.
