The Ukrainians

I was just listening to some of their old songs and wondered why there is no separate topic on them here. Perhaps I just overlooked it? Their "Anarchy in the UK" is well worth a listen. Has anyone been to see them live?

No, but I'd very much like to. I don't think they've ever been around this way. And no forthcoming gigs currently listed, shame.

Good tip, Christine. 8)

I´ve sen them live three times back in the mid 90ies, once in Bremen, twice in Hannover. Must have been 1994 and 1996, I guess. I remember those shows very fondly. At the ´96 show they had substituted the accordion player with a keyboard player which was a bit disappointing. But hey, they had so many standout songs and I still listen to them regularly. Great band, well worth checking out.

After the Bremen show, I went backstage and as soon as I´d opened the door The Legendary Len Liggins ( ) invited me in and before I could do anything he put a beer in my hand (which of course was very welcome). I chatted with the band and had their second CD signed - some of them with personal greetings like "Ingmar - Love and best wishes, Paul Dino Briggs" or "Best wishes Ingmar, Love Dave". On a personal level, they actually were one of the nicest bands I´ve met.

I´d recommend their first two CDs, the self titled debut album and its successor, "Vorony". And a part from that Sex Pistols cover, they did nice versions of a few Smiths songs (my favourite track is "Bigmouth strikes again", called "Batyar"), and of Velvet Underground´s "Venus in furs".
"Just once I would like to see the coyote eat that feathered freak !" (Sledge Hammer)

If it´s the "Istoriya"-Best of you can´t do much wrong. All the important tracks are on it - "Oi divchino" (an incredibly great song), " "Vorony", "De ye moya mila ?" and many more great original songs. Plus, it contains "Venus in furs" ("Chekannya") and two Smiths covers, "Bigmouth" and "The queen is dead" ("Koroleva ne pomerla").

Go for it, I´d say.

In fact, The Ukrainians started life as a John Peel Session by The Wedding Present. Their then guitar-player Pete Solowka, who has Ukrainian roots, suggested they´d do the session playing mostly traditional Ukrainian folksongs in a punkrock style. They included a wonderful instrumental version of "Those were the days" (which was actually based on a traditional song).

Here´s what wikipedia says about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_ ... l_Sessions

A few days later and it's arrived, ripped, copied to generic-non Apple- MP3 player and it's brilliant! Cheers Duke!

Some UK tour dates have now been announced for February 2009.

Unfortunately their website - http://www.the-ukrainians.com/ - is currently down.

Some of the dates are listed on their myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/theukrainians

But I have reason to believe that there are going to be more dates than the ones now listed there...
