Ike Reilly

Post Wed Mar 05, 2008 3:19 pm

Ike Reilly is the support act tonight and tomorrow for the Pogues. I am curious to know if he has a full band or if he does an acoustic solo show. Someone please post some details after the show. Here are some lyrics from a couple of his songs; Commie Drives A Nova from one of his older albums Salesmen and Racists. This song kicks ass with the full band, however I really enjoyed his acoustic version when I saw him in St. Paul last summer. The second song When Irish Eyes Are Burning is from his latest release We Belong to the Staggering Evening.

If you don't know Ike Reilly, do yourself a favor and get to the shows early so you can check him out. :!:

Commie Drives A Nova

I like the curves of my Communist
I love the words of my Communist
I kiss the lips of my Communist
Grab the hips of my Communist
Meet the stars, drink the bars
Ride in her car
She's got a Nova
Commie drives a Nova

Here comes my Commie with a millionaire
With strap-on hunger and a feedbag
Gritty itty ear cuz she commandeered
A cocktail weenie at the protest

Drink to the party drink to the host
Fuck this party lets hit the coast
Drive your Nova like its stolen
Go Commie go
She got a Nova
Commie drives a Nova

I was a worker, she was a Commie
I had a job, she had fatigues
Khaki, cammie, fashion and power
She fills em out and I aim to please
I never seen nothing baby better than a Commie
In her Nova with her panties and a pocket full of rye
She's heavy and sweet
I dig in my heels
Lay it on the line for the party tonight

I like the curves of my Communist
Smoke the dope with my Communist
Pin the hopes of my Communist
Love the homes of my Communist
Meet the stars, drink the bars
Drive in the car
She got a Nova
Commie drives a Nova (she gettin heavy)

(x2)
She went from featherweight to flyweight to bantam weight to lightweight to phantom weight to welterweight to helter skelter middle weight
Middle weight to cruiserweight
Boozer weight
Used to wait to get it on

Commie drives a Nova (x4)
She got a Nova
Commie drives a Nova (feather weight to flyweight to bantamweight to lightweight to phantom weight to welter weight)
She got a Nova
Commie drives a Nova (she gettin heavy)

When Irish Eyes Are Burning

I belong to the staggering evening
I belong to the sweltering nights
I belong to the girl that’s leaving
But all she wants to do is fight tonight
Twist into my Irish eyes
I get beatings with the loudest cries
When you ever gonna realize
All we’re gonna do is fight tonight

It doesn’t matter if you’re seventeen
It doesn’t matter if you’re twenty-one
It doesn’t matter if you’re thirty-three
Forgive me baby, Jesus what I done

I went to see the Violent Femmes
With my friend John and his girlfriend
But right before the show began
He mixed it up with a girl named Tank
Now I believe Tank was lesbian
Somebody cracks, Mama let’s be friends
She said I was too musical
I was tryin’ for beautiful (not sure)
She threw the first punch, it was the last
Knocked John out cold flat on his back
Well, I’m a geek, she’s like six foot ten
Got on his shoulders and I watched the Femmes

When Irish eyes are burnin’ bright
Drink your women run for your life
A deadly shot can rule the night
When Irish eyes are burnin’

Some time ago I went to a show
With a Serbian girl that I still know
It was Friday night and as the show let out
I was rolling all over around on the ground
Under the lights of the marquee
At the Liberty Theater I was skinnin’ my knees
I was breakin’ my nose on the fist of a Croat
Smashin’ my balls on the boot of one too
Losing’ my teeth but I didn’t really know it
I was bleedin’ on someone and dreamin’ of you

Just as the tide was beginning to turn I saw the face of Kevin Moriarty
Matt and Dragonbreath and Eugene Graham
Brian Quinn and Brendan O’Shea
Chuck Sweeney and John F Quigley
Were clean and sober but goddamn mean
Christopher Farley and James Ford Murphy
Makin’ me laugh when I look for my teeth

When Irish eyes are burnin’ bright
Drink your women run for your life
A deadly shot can rule the night
When Irish eyes are burnin’

It doesn’t matter if you’re seventeen
It doesn’t matter if you’re twenty-one
It doesn’t matter if you’re thirty-three
Forgive me baby, Jesus what I done
Forgive me baby, Jesus what I done

I belong to the staggering evening
I belong to the sweltering nights
I belong to the girl that’s leaving
But all we’re gonna do is fight tonight

Twist into my Irish eyes
I get beatings with the loudest cries
When you ever gonna realize
We belong to the sweltering nights
And I don't want no grave
Just throw my ashes in the field
And hope there's some soul left to save

Ike played both those songs and a bunch of others I couldn't name. Probably my favorite had the line "Yesterday I sunk, today I float" in it. Pretty good, balls-out rock and roll. The theater was still half-empty when he got on stage, but he got a decent reception from the people who were there.

Did Ike perform alone or did he have the full band?

Full band: guitar, bass, drums, keys/guitar. Ike was on acoustic/electric guitars and the occasional harmonica. His guitar players are really good and had a few really searing solos.

I think that is Valentine's Day In Juarez off his newest release.

You can hear one of my personal favorites here:

Commie Drives A Nova
And I don't want no grave
Just throw my ashes in the field
And hope there's some soul left to save
