Is Steve Earle America's Greatest Songwriter?

Post Wed Aug 08, 2007 7:50 pm

from The Belfast Telegraph

Is Steve Earle America's greatest living songwriter?

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

Interview by Robert Chalmers

He's survived seven wives, 50 arrests and a monstrous drugs habit.
He's lambasted the War on Terror and infuriated the political establish-
ment at every turn. Meantime, his music just gets better and better,
as his long-awaited new album proves.

It's a mighty long article. Here's the link.

Great article. Thanks for the link. :D

I think it´s hard to tell THE greatest living songwriter, but to me Steve Earle is amongst the best of them. Apart from his political songs, which are mostly quite good, he´s written some very beautiful tunes and lyrics. There´s a lot of poetry in them.

"Since you´re gone my empty arms have nothing left to hold
And your memory cannot keep me warm but it never leaves me cold"
("You´re still standing there", from LP/CD "I feel alright")

Beautiful.

But speaking of other great living songwriters, the early works of Kris Kristofferson (and here especially his first album from the early 70ies) are quite outstanding.

And of course we shouldn´t forget the man who cannot sing at all and can´t play guitar and harmonica very well but who´s written some very fine songs indeed - Mr Robert Zimmerman. :D

And here's a bit of Mr Earle, doing Copperhead Road at Cambridge a couple of weeks ago. For those who haven't already seen it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/cambridgefo ... teveearle/

When I was in Ireland Irish radio gave Steve´s "Galway girl" quite some airplay, either the original or various cover versions.

It´s simply a great song.

Looking forward to hearing Steve´s new album which is due to release at the end of September.

I´ve listened to "Washington Square Serenade" three times so far and I must say I´m a bit disappointed. While there are a couple of great tunes on this album ("Tennesse blues", "City of immigrants", "Steve´s hammer", "Satellite radio"), it contains one of my least favourite Steve Earle tracks of all times - "Red is the color". Plus it sounds occasionalye uninspired – something I´ve heardly experienced on a Steve Earle record. I hope he hasn´t gone completely soft.

I´ll give it a couple more listenings though – and I hope it will improve on me.

I've seen Steve Earle a few times, most recently last Wednesday playing with Billy Bragg at the Woody and Marjorie Guthrie benefit show for the HDSA.

He's amazing.
