Well, the Gogol train rolls in here (Vancouver, Canada) on Sep 2, and with my first strike pay cheque (just entered week 4) i snatched up two tickets. Only $17.50 a piece, not bad for a Commodore show.

Hey Low D, When you say strike do you mean dispute with company etc, please tell us more regarding dispute.

yes, by "strike" i mean labour dispute, one where my union has ordered all workers to walk off the job, after months of trying to negotiate a new contract.

i work for the city of vancouver. all the cities around us have signed new contracts. but vancouver, the richest of the bunch, won't sign. it's pushing 7 weeks, and really fucking sucks. we are asking for nothing more than workers in surrounding cities. the city won't even negotiate.

worst of all, i had to argue with some hipster dufuses (or is that "dufi"?) who were using a gas lawn mower to cut the grass at my neighbourhood park today. they didn't feel that this was "scabbing", they just wanted to play their soccer game tomorrow. they feel that because the park is public property, they have the right. to follow their logic would leave public sector workers without the right to unionize, which is about what i told them.

but we had a lawn sale today and pulled in $70 (the kids made $27 from their stuff), so we can afford to go out before the gogol show tomorrow.

After reading this thread, I listened to some of their albums and they're great! They remind me of a French band named "Les Négresses Vertes".

Gogol Bordello played in Belgium only 2 weeks ago, but I didn't know them yet. :(

Hey Cdn Steve, sorry we missed you. Didn't leave home till almost 7 (babysitter), walked about 1/2 way there, and I realized i'd forgot to bring some photo ID. Once in a while, they card everybody there. I've just turned 34 and it doesn't usually happen, but i didn't want to risk being stuck at the door. Anyway, after returning home, we went straight to the commodore.

Great show, but with crappy sound (where we were standing, anyway). I find the commodore is hit & miss with sound. Dropkick Murphys was terrible too, but Bob Geldof was great. Flogging Molly not so good, but Steve Earle great. Maybe the good ones travel with their own sound person, i dunno.

Gogol Bordello - Commodore Ballroom

Hey - Low D - I had my eyes peeled for those shiny pants, but didn't see you anywhere last night at the Commodore. Maybe another time for drinks!
The show was bloody great!
I found the sound mix out in front to be a bit lacking in vocals, and in front of the speakers, it was just loud, but overall it worked for me. The energy level that those guys bring makes up for any tweaking of the sound that might be necessary. How do you properly set the levels when the singer puts a firebucket over the mike and beats it with drumsticks? The violin was nice and clear, though, and the bass was thumpin'.
Good to see that they're making a name for themselves - they're a hard working bunch, for sure. Crowd was enthusiastic - I swapped sweat with more than a few of them, and I thought it was great that Eugene invited the whole place to the after party. I'll definitely be keeping my eyes open for this band to come through town again.
While googling this morning, I found a site about a DVD documentary to be released next month about Eugene Hutz's trip back to the Ukraine to touch base with his gypsy roots - you can see a preview at http://www.thepiedpiperofhutzovina.com

I bought the new album yesterday. It's awesome!
In the booklet there's an "extra prima thanks" to ... Elijah Wood! I didn't know they got their inspiration from Hobbit traditionals? 8)

hutz and wood were in a movie together, and one of the two girls in the band dates elijah
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior
Shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back out and shout
"Let's have another round!"
