I'm thinking the woman you're referring to would be Petra Hayden, who is probably one of the best backing vocalists, for a start, that there is. I saw the Decemberists at Coachella this year - where, as is probably usual, Colin had the audience eating out of his hand. I missed Petra Hayden. The last time I saw the band before that was when I guested on a couple of songs at the end of their set at the Henry Fonda theater in LA a year or something ago. There was an agreeable balance with the guys and the women in the band at that time, for me.

i was pretty dissapointed actually
whoever plays the strongs on the album does NOT play them live
the band members are terrible players of cello, and stand up bass

but, the viola player is actually good
and also hot as hell

Well, I just bought three tickets (me, my wife, and my daughter) to see the Decemberists with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at a local outdoor venue, July 14th. Should be a real treat.
What kind of fuckery is this?

My daughter is working as an intern with the Grant Park Orchestra in Chicago this summer, with whom the Decemberists will perform at a free outdoor concert (the only one that is free, apparently.)

not to mention she's a veritable virtuoso on the viola
she's just is so far above the bassist that it's sort of absurd
when i saw him he had tape on the neck of his cello
(indicating where his fingers would go...)
my teacher made us stop doing that in grade 10 for christ's sake

it's interesting that you played with them
considering another great folk artist opened for them when i saw them
alasdair roberts was an amazing act
his scottish ballads were much better than colin's whining in my opinion

Yeah, I do.

They are boring as hell live. July, July! was the only song with any energy at all. I saw them at the same venue where I first saw THE POGUES, the Vegas HOB. The Decemberists couldn't even get that little place going.

If tween dance circles and nasal story-singing from some sea obsessed dork are your thing, well to each their own.

It just struck me as one big stupid gimmick. When they were all flailing around on the ground, they should've stayed there.

Their show here with the LA Philharmonic I heard was fantastic as well. I didn't see but heard nothing but good words.
