Yes. And it is an example (a very rare example) of a movie which I liked better than the book it was based on. But not because of the happy-ending. :)

We went in on the [free] advanced screening. The book was far better.

In my experience the book is always better (not having read this one I can't comment specifically) but I would like to know if anyone out there has an example of the film being better than the book. Mods, feel free to move my question wherever you see fit.

Stephen King's The Shining is both a good book and a great movie. The movie is actually quite a bit different than the book, and the differences are used to great effect.

I thought that "The Commitments" was way better than the book. Conversely,
I thought the "Van" movie sucked (mostly because of the guy who played opposite
Colm Meaney-can't recall at the moment).

P. S. I Love You soundtrack

Post Fri Feb 13, 2009 6:05 am

Does anyone know what the soundtrack does not have Fairytale of New York on it? That songs was kind of a big deal in the movie. It would also have been a great way to get more (younger) Americans into the band. I'm 22, and most people my age haven't even heard of the Pogues  Maybe it's just that we're cut off here in Montana.

It's a silly question, but I've been wondering about it for ages!

I liked the film version of Fight Club a lot better than the book. It's been a few years since I've read the book but I remember the ending of it being extremely cheesed out. I can't think of anything else...

Well, as far as I remember, it is the characters who sing FoNY in the movie, not the Pogues. I suppose the film makers could have included the film version of the song but they may have concluded, as I have long since, that only The Pogues should do FoNY.

They'd be crazy to try to include any version of FoNY that wasn't by the Pogues, I agree. I'm pretty sure, though, unless I'm not remembering it right, that they do play the Pogues' version. I *think* that they cut some of the song out (from the intro to where Shane and Kirsty start hurling insults at each other) but it is the original song. The priest starts singing part of it. I might be wrong though.

IMDB indicates that it's the Pogues' version used in the film:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0431308/soundtrack

They also indicate that there are three version of Love You 'Til The End (the Pogues' original, and two covers of what I suppose are characters singing it to each other).

I'm sure all this may well be true, but I can't say any of it had a lingering effect on the memory banks. In which case, it seems likely that somebody authorized a truncated "pogues version" and that person's head is currently rolling.

I love this line from the Rhapsody review of the "P.S. I Love You" soundtrack:

"The soft-rock ethos behind the soundtrack to P.S. I Love You is so absolute that even bands with punk inclinations (old ones, like the Pogues; new ones, like The Academy Is...) break out the acoustic guitars to dish out warm fuzzies."

One of the other versions is Darryl Hunt's version, which is very good too! I love his voice :)

There don't appear to be samples on the page, but his first Bish album can be purchased at:
