Shouldn't be too long. I happen to have it on very good authority that physical copies are in the hands of people not at the publishing house (Philip's hands, for example).

It's an interesting read. I have chosen to skip the "fictional" excerpts and just read the parts which critique the album. I will go back and follow the author's personal saga once I've done that.

I've never been a big fan of fanfic (I think it was ruined for me in High School by some terrible cruft called "The Doctor and The Enterprise"), so I have to admit that I'm nervous about the fiction aspect of the book. What I HAVE read seems well written though, so fingers are crossed and hopes are high. It's an interesting approach to writing about an album, and seems more engaging than a more generic and purely academic "and then comes track number four. The production quality seems hurried, but the original intent shines through etc etc"

Yeah, it is what it is. And I agree with Philip how blending fiction and biography is difficult to digest as a reader. However, I've always been intrigued by this angle of writing. The taking of inspiration from one art form and slipping it into your own. It reminds me of that Sean Penn film called "The Indian Runner" which comes from the Bruce Springsteen song, "Highway Patrolman".

Is the film worth watching ? "Highway patrolman" is one of Springsteen´s best songs, lyrically and musically.

Yes, definately a film worth watching at least 3 times - it's one of my faves with the marvellous David Morse, and I seem to recall that Alex Cox was also inspired by the Springsteen song to make the film, El Patrullero (Highway Patrolman).

I'm quite taken by the book. I tend to avoid FanFac like the plague despite having an admiration for folks that twist and weave inspirations and create something completly different yet related. I'm also reading the 'facts' before the story.
I wish I'd done biology for an urge within me wanted to do it then

That's not quite what I said. I read the book in the manner I did because my first duty was to fact-check, I suppose, a test the book passes extremely well with just one minor error (The Pogues' first two albums were not, in fact, available only on import in the USA: delayed though the releases were, they did come out on Stiff/Enigma in the US (Red Roses) and MCA (Rum, Sodomy).

"Hello, and welcome to MASTERMIND. Contestant number one - your name?"

"Philip Chevron."

"And your specialist subject?"

"Very, very obscure facts about The Pogues."

It's a shame they wouldn't let you on (presumably), cos you'd piss it!

(Somehow I don't think "Very very obscure facts about the band I've been in for over 20 years, on and off" would get past the producers. Which is a shame.)

The talk about avid hunting for Pogues rarities has been split to personal stories: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=9180

Don't understand this. I have so far received three copies from Amazon (I like to test the marketplace from time to time), though I have noticed recently that Amazon have been making a bit too free with the "we ain't got it, we'll have it soon" emails. I've had a number of those recently the day before the item arrived.

If I take the glasses off, and hold the page close to my eyes, and squint a bit, that usually does the trick. Though it does make my head hurt after a short while.

Haven't ordered the book yet. Waiting to see others' views on it first. And Christmas is coming anyway...
