T in the Park: The Pogues review
12 July 2008
By Rosanna Chianta

WALKING on stage with his fag defiantly in hand, flames on shirt (not from his cigarette, although the state Shane McGowan was in last night it felt like merely a matter of time), the Pogues frontman made his entrance and in one, short, puff cost T in the Park a fine or flouting the smoking ban on Scotland by lighting up in an enclosed space.

After a brief Irish jig from the rest of the band, McGowan mumbles and fumbles his way in to 'Streams of Whisky', a subject he clearly knows a thing or two about. None of the security guards braved a confrontation with him to remind him that the ADVERTISEMENT smoking ban in Scotland means he could be fined. It's doubtful he would have cared, anyway, or would have been able to register the objection.

Technically, however, he still put on a good show, with fans, some of whom looked far too young to remember The Pogues from their heyday, heartily singing along. What MacGowan did say, he mumbled incomprehensibly into the microphone, but the crowd didn't seem to care; they were lapping up his presence.

The disgruntled tone of his singing voice still managed to filter through, and he filled in the gaps between his vocals by swinging the microphone and haphazardly dancing to a groove only he knew the rythm to, grabbing any opportunity to mock-conduct the rest of his band, who were, needless to say, more together than their frontman.

'There's only one Shane MacGowan!' was the chant of choice. Quite.

BBC have put up just the one live track (Dirty Old Town) from T. Watched BBC interactive last night and just the one song played. Had to sit through 20 minute segments of Kooks, Fratellis and Kaiser Chiefs and much worse

One of the most mean-spirited reviews I've read for a long time.

Anyway, I enjoysed the clip - Shane (and the rest of the band) look in pretty good form to me!

Is it possible, that only UK /IRE residents can watch it?? All day I get the message "It doesn't seem to be working, try again later."

Probably if youwork around your connection settings (proxy in particular) you can get a proxy from UK and be able to view it. Don't ask me exactly how it's done, I just followed instructions to watch the Rugby World Cup on...is it called ITV?
Anyway, I confirm that, I'm Italian and cannae display that.
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior
Shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back out and shout
"Let's have another round!"

Good clip, Kilkenny Cat, thanks for posting.
Sitting through all that for one song from The Pogues shows true devotion, beyond the call of duty. 8)

There appears to be some disagreement about which key the song is in. This problem goes back to the Elvis Costello-led "arangement" in 1985 whereby "Dirty Old Town" moves from D to G to C to G. Since 2001, we ditched that version and have just played it all through in G. Not everyone got the memo though. Fuck it, it's The Pogues, we won't be losing sleep over it: everyone knows we can do it properly if we feel like it! :P

I like the way the key moves in that song.
Though our guitarist hated that cause he needed to switch the harmonica, so he just ditched the harmonica in the bridge

Did anyone manage to ahem "save" this video to their "memory" as it seems to be off the BBC site now!

I would love to "hear bout it" - pm if required.

Thanks.
