Steve Lillywhite On Producing The Pogues

Post Thu Jul 10, 2008 9:10 am

World Cafe, July 9, 2008 - The Pogues' members weren't your typical Irish folk players. Led by Shane MacGowan, the band took its multicultural musical cues from its countrymen in The Clash and gave Irish folk music a punk-rock spirit.
The group's first two albums, Red Roses for Me (1984) and Rum, Sodomy & the Lash (1985), were solid, if occasionally rough around the edges. It was 1988's If I Should Fall from Grace with God that brought MacGowan into his own as a songwriter — and that featured the fractured Christmas carol "Fairytale of New York." In an interview with host David Dye, Steve Lillywhite talks about producing what's considered The Pogues' finest achievement

That was interesting. Sometimes it’s nice to put a voice to a name that appears on many of the albums that I grew up listening to. Over all Steve Lillywhite sounds like a pretty dry guy, he seems to speak with controlled enthusiasm. The thing that really got me was the way he pronounces Caits name, it sounds like he's saying "cut". Is this just his accent or have I been saying it wrong all these years?...Once again I thank Macrua,I do not know where you find the time dig up all this stuff.

I've always pronounced it "Cot" as Steve does, though I'll admit she answers to several variations.

Incidentally, the current issue of Q Magazine has a 4-page feature on "Fairytale Of New York".

You can put them on google alerts! If they're mentioned anywhere on the Web you get an email. This can be both good and bad: you get info straightaway but if you don't like getting emails or going through them it can be a pain.

(Not to diminish MacRua's work in posting everything.) :P

Re Cait: I never thought her name was pronounced any other way except "cot," rhymes with bot, tot, lot. All these American girls named Caitlin are actually pronouncing it all "wrong" and don't know it!
it's a bit of a smooch-ah
