I'm a girl (a very old one) and I love The Pogues. I think the author was scraping the bottom of the idea barrel to come up with that boy band/girl band thing. Pogues songs are very respectful to women, I think. They are songs about human feelings. I Love YOu to the End, Livin in a World Without You, beautiful songs about how much you need someone to love. Gender really isn't the issue. I do like the fact that their songs are not about bashing a woman's head in with a rock, or putting a pistol in her mouth, as I've heard in some popular songs lately.

Well, poor old Lorca did get a pistol "up his arse" of course, but he was a bloke so that doesn't count.

Hey, nboldock. Don't you think the Pogues' intention was to protest, not promote, what happened to Lorca? He is considered by his biographer to have been executed by the Nationalists not just because of his Republican views, but also because he was gay. "Blokes" do count. Silly goose.

I hate it when Mother's Day is coming up and all the ads on tv say "a perfect gift for Mother's Day " and it's A Daniel O'Donnell cd or something equally bland.I'm a granny never mind a mother and I don't listen to stuff like that. When it's Father's Day ads are for Greatest Rock Hits or Status Quo .

Ha ha ha!! That was my line, Duke. I missed this article by a few months by the looks.
Of course men and women 'listen' to music different. But as for tastes - it's a personal thing like what brand of coffee or chocolate you buy. Yep - I'd have to agree, Duke. Men and women are different. I started that study when I was 3 years old and am still studying...

Just to muddy the waters a little, the Pogues concerts I've been to are full of guys. Intoxicated ones. Can be a little intimidating.

You, intimidating? Nah. Anyway, I was mesmerized by your . . . camera equipment. Somebody else smashed into me, trying to displace me as I clung to the front barrier. My poor rib. Security dealt with him double-quick. Nonetheless, assigned seating venues in future for me.

You, intimidating? Nah.

I was thinking more in terms of Guy and Intoxicated. Dang. Now I'm totally questioning my machismo AND my intoxication levels.

Intoxicated and Guy? I blame Territa, Rich, IrishRose, KwaK, Lesh, and ... umm ... others for the intoxiated. The Guy part is probably my dad's fault.

Thank you four vouching for me. You're awesome.

soulfinger wrote:A woman called Laura Barton wrote a piece in the Guardian today in which she proposes that men and women listen to music differently.

She suggests that men like Public Enemy, Kraftwerk, Oasis, Madness, The Pogues, Slayer, Jeff Mills and Frank Zappa while women are alleged to prefer Cat Stevens in the 1970's, James Blunt, Dido, Take That, Maroon 5, Joni Mitchell, Eternal and Tori Amos.

She also says that her method for storing records is to put the ones she thinks would be friends next to each other.

What worries me is that some bloke may have agreed to pay her for writing this!

My little lady would like four of the former and only one of the latter. Does this make her a little bloke?? :)
