American Idol tonight!

Post Wed Apr 18, 2007 1:10 am

I was watching American Idol and sure enough there was Sunny Side! I proudly told me kids that is "The Pogues". I think it is great that they are getting some new exposure ....even if they are not getting any money for it.

This type of exposure is a very good thing!

is it worth watching or a rather crappy interpretation of that beautiful tune ?

That guy doesn't know what he is talking about. First off, his statement that, "Every single song the Pogues ever put out is about one of the following: drinking, fighting, doing drugs, hating the English." shows a limited understanding of the Pogues. That aside, his argument is that the lyrics of the song do not fit the audience that Cadillac is going after. He's making an assumption about the target audience in the first place, and then builds on the argument by pointing out how obviously the lyrics should be offensive to the assumed target audience. I would think the advertisers knew what the lryics said and were going for a certain amount of irony there and something that would appeal to their true target audience. Based on this guy's analysis, the Pogues must have a narrowly defined set of fans and cars likewise must have a narrow target audience.

I am a happily married, white collar, Christian family man who is a big fan of the Pogues, and who also likes expensive cars. How do I live with myself?

He had to have meant the Cadillac ad and not the song being performed by the American Idol singers. A Pogues song on a show that celebrates the worst of the music industry would have caused Simon Cowell to explode.

Besides, the only singer with the chutzpah to sing a Pogues song would be Blake, and he did "When the Stats Go Blue." Er, not that I follow the show, or anything.

I've been seeing this one commercial lately, that is using one of the Jam's songs (I really can't remember the one right now) and another one using the Clash's "Should I Stay Or Should I Go". What's with these commercials using these bands? Or is it, as Philip stated earlier, the record companies doing what they want -- the "Selling Out".

BTW- I never saw the "Sunny Side Of The Street" commercial on the TV. Only saw it on that website.

I'm not sure that was quite my position. It's just commerce, and whoever chose "Sunnyside" for the ad has a very fine sense of TV dynamics - the intro just storms in.

On some shows on the recent East Coast USA tour, we sometimes followed "Sunnyside" with one or other of us - usually me or Spider - yelling "Go Buy Cadillacs! Buy! Buy!"

I can't take the ethics of TV commercials too seriously at a time when the ethics of the American administration are in the toilet. Feeling superior about commercialism is an indulgence best kept for less troubling times.

New Order is being used to sell Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. Heard it just last night.

....You got your chocolate in my peanut butter, no you got your peanut butter in my chocolate.
