I also saw it during the oscars. I thought it was just going to be instrumental, but then i heard the kyrics come on, and immediately i wondered, "do they know what shane is saying?" Haha, not quite the lyrics you'd expect to hear in a commercial.

Ok so I was watching the academy awards tonight, when during a commercial break I heard a familiar tune during the commercials... it turned out to be Sunnyside Of The Street!!!! And it was being used to hawk Cadillacs!!!! Now I'm sure this isn't the first time a pogues tune has been used to hawk a product, but it's the first time I've seen it (here in cali), so i hope you guy are making a lot of dough off the licensing, and just know that from now on whenever I hear that song, I'm gonna want ti go out and buy a Cadillac (good thing I'm poor, cause I listen to Hell's Ditch a lot)!!!! I'm not sure if I should say congrats, or call you a sell out... But I guess you deserve to make some money off your music... so I'll choose congrats :)

I know nothing about this, honest. But I do not intend to stay ignorant for long.

Saw the commercial too. Excellent exposure indeed.

Sorry, didn't know which thread to respond to.

It's called Morning Ritual, you can watch it here:

Bizarre, if you ask me.

same here except it was a futon.
My girlfriend did not believe me that he said "lust for vomit". They probably should have done it without lyrics anyways, since there's only like 10 seconds.

interesting there is also a commerical with an iggy pop song.

Once Upon A Time In America

Post Mon Feb 26, 2007 1:36 pm

Not just Sunnyside of the Street in the commercials, but Celine Dion singing the unmistakeable first line of Fairy Tale of New York (but with different words, from Once Upon A Time In America) during Morricone's homage too.

just grand

The Lust for Life commercials (some other car company) skipped choice parts of the lyrics.

>but ain't the music just grand?

Agreed, always been one of my many favorites actually. High-powered ad companies are not entirely slouches about musical taste.

Me, too. Strategically placed just before the big awards were announced. Just shook my head in disbelief.

I'm sure that's exactly what Shane-O had in mind when he penned the lyrics, eh? A big fat gas-guzzling Caddy, a house in the 'burbs, a white collar job and a wife and two kids?! :?

Just saw the 60 second ad on the web. Too funny when you put the full lyrics to the imagery. What were the ad people thinking? "Oh, they'll never understand what he's singing." I guess so. :)

I just saw it last night too, and I thought it was actually pretty cool. I can't properly explain the difference between a clever use of a song and blatant whoring by the artist (John Mellencamp, I'm looking at you), but this seemed more clever than anything.

Of course, I'd assumed the band was in the know about it, and judging by Phillip's comment, that may not be the case. I hope someone got a nice payday and that the money gets properly distributed.

Reconstructed Shane ???

Post Mon Feb 26, 2007 6:23 pm

The ad is brilliant for two reasons: first, the 60 second version references the line " I had the women and I had the booze". I'm sure there must be some parallel with driving a caddy, but if not it still produced a good laugh!

Second, when I was awaken by my frantic wife saying " It's Shane! It's Shane!", groggily I took the opportunity to remind her that The Pogues have always been massive and that was why I needed to attend 3 shows in Boston!

Special thanks to the band for the opening!!

Must've missed it. As soon as Celine Dion comes on, I often find something better to do.
