MOJO's Greatest Brit Tracks Ever

Post Wed Feb 22, 2006 3:39 pm

From the March 2006 issue...The 50 Greatest British Tracks Ever (I wonder how Shane feels abou that tag), which includes a nice photo of Shane a-grinnin'...

The Pogues--Rainy Night in Soho (1986)

With Shane MacGowan already ensconced as the Laureate of the drinking classes, the Poguetry in Motion EP showcased different sides of his writing. A disarming, wistful but uplifting song of romance, remembrance and renewal sketched out across a Soho that owed more to Colin McInnes than Martin Amis, it proved the band were branching out (muted cornet, sweeping strings), and that there was more to MacGowan than songs of whiskey and death.

except Rainy Night was written in Britain, set in Britain, recorded in Britain for a British record company by a band formed in Britain....

whereas Back In The USSR ....

-----------

If you ask Shane about being born in Britain, I'm sure he'd give Oscar Wilde's brilliant reply (to someother question) 'Being born in barn doesn't make me a horse!'

And quite right too
