the making of fony

Post Tue Jan 10, 2006 1:30 am

after seeing this great documentary and seeing them in the studio together i ask myself what they really DID there? there wasn´t recorded any new version of FONY as far as i know. the katie melua i tunes- version was the live performance...so what did they record there? or was it just for rehearsing?

We did that thing where we returned to the scene of the crime and pretended to play the song (although in fact we did play, though not record, the song). We always made it clear that we never intended to re-record FoNY. The Katie Melua version from the Jonathan Ross show was requested of us by Warners to satisfy a marketing imperative - Downloads - which did not exist in 1987. Did it help? Dunno. The song is still high in this week's download chart (the record itself fell from 3 to 5 to 12), so I guess it must have played its part.

It was an excellent programme all the same IMHO.

Mr.C - James mentions in his blog that you recorded FONY with Cerys Matthews in Cardiff for itunes (and I think you referred to doing that too on here). Any news on that? (I've downloaded all the other versions by the way!)
Last night as I slept I dreamt I met with Behan, I shook him by the hand as we passed the time of day.

I did sort of address this soon after we did the thing. Perhaps one of our lovely Moderators could link you to it?

Sorry - the "guest" saying thank you was me (don't want to be thought of as being ungrateful, especially when one of the Pogues replies - which is so cool :D )
