TWO breaths away from a coughing fit with fag and glass in hand, Pogues singer Shane McGowan takes a battered metal tray from Spider Stacey during Streams Of Whisky.

Cackling like only he can, while watching James Fearnley make his accordion bleed, Shane puts down his drink, cackles again and bangs the tray off his head several times.

To the drunken house-full of green and white hooped shirts, this is pure Irish rebel entertainment. The Pogues aren't dead.

They just have to wait a wee bit longer now and again for Shane to finish his drink
