I have no attachment to the song, so I watched both of those thinking they're just two more reminders of the neverending cheese-fest that Fairytale has become and was probably always destined to become. I'm sure it's by design because the powers-that-be like the fact that it casually desensitizes people to the reality of people without a support system during the holidays. It's corny to me that just because there's cursing in a Christmas song it's somehow thought of as being cool and gritty and bucking convention, when it actually just reinforces the casual cruelty and callousness embedded in the status quo.

However, I'd love to hear someone do a grindcore metal version of it.

Dirty Old Town on Belgian TV 1985 (Playback!!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7YW8hNO5zI

unfortunately no live performance, but great video quality and good to see the lot in their prime days ... Shane seems half in the bag already, but what's new?

This must actually be later than 1985. It's Darryl here on bass and he didn't replace Cait until late 1986.

Anyway, a funny barely half-assed mimed performance.

Shane didn't really hit the skids until later after all the endless touring, so that must be the wrong date. Here's a live one of Dirty Old Town in France from 1986: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8_pPKi_zSY

Great version, but that's not in France but rather London I think. It was part of this documentary from early 1986: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGL8SZxX6QM

Can't name you the name of the location where the live footage was shot, but it's in Clerk's Pogues' biography and I believe in Fearnley's book as well. Have forgotten the name of the venue and no access to the books at this very moment.

You are right that Shane went really downhill at the end of the 80s, but he was an alcoholic long before that. Guess the Belgian playback video must be from the 1986/87 period, the blue guitar Phil "plays" was used then I believe.

Btw I tried to write you a pm on New Year's to answer your messages, but it wasn't possible because you seem to have disabled that function.

Edit: I think the venue from Enfants de Rock was called "The Mean Fiddler" in London. Some Pogues lunatic correct me if I'm wrong ;-)

Oh I got confused because of the French subtitles. I remember that documentary.

Yeah, in Fearnley's book it says they all drank too much, Phil even went into rehab because of it, but it wasn't until all the touring that Shane got really erratic and stopped giving a shit, and that's the Shane we see there. I just feel like it's sad to represent that mimed appearance as the Pogues in their prime with Shane "just being Shane," because other appearances during those years show them really on top of it, even Shane. Like these from that time period that are fun to revisit:

How the fuck did I miss this, pro shot of Philip singing 1000s from NY Roseland Ballroom :D

https://youtu.be/SMm_sYMb_LE

If I recall wasn't there a team following The Pogues for a live release and documentary ( well before Paris) ???

Maybe this was part of it, anyway it's brilliant and I'd love more of this gig.

Apologies if this is common knowledge and I'm just late to the party lol

Wow  . But have to disagree. They are really good (apart from the vocal at the start). They have not sanitized the song, they have the right attitude.

Philip's accent is lovely. I'm sure he would've explained best exactly what is was comprised of.
Just sounds of Dublin to me.

Gladly trade my American one. Not enough to go all Kathleen Turner or Lindsay Lohan though.

Wow. I also missed this

Yes Frances, Philip's accent is just natural Dublin. Great video.

The Devonshire Arms in Camden is the pub were they interview Shane I have a feeling the concert footage is either in the same pub or the Pindar of Wakefield wich was in Kings Cross. Think its called the Water Rats now or may have closed. I went on a pub crawl of London a few years back and went to the Devonshire Arms in Camden wich had recently changed its name back. It was a real heavy metal pub and we looked well out of place. We ordred a couple of beers and the bar man looked at me and just said "Pogues???" and I said "yeah" and laughed
