I happen to have the tape of that show and he ain't lying... Phillip, you looked so proud of yourself - thumbs up all over the place!! I'm so happy I happened to catch it on Comedy Central. BTW, it was asked further back in the thread what Dennis Miller said, and while I only started taping after him, I think it was some sort of crack about not being able to understand them. Idiot....

Of course they are! Also known as the "staggering regiment", they are a special force created to protect the rights of drunks world-wide and to selflessly and heroically test the effects of alcohol-drinking on themselves in the meantime.

And some more serious info

so what does pogue mean? if pogues is a derogatory term for unarmed soldiers. and pogue mahone means kiss my arse, does pogue mean arse? so are the pogues really the arses?

Well pogue mahone is derived from the irish póg mo thóin, which does mean kiss my arse.

But pogue doesn't mean arse, as póg is the irish to kiss, so if anything pogue would mean kiss.

More information is out there. Search for "Pogues Marines".

The military version seems to stem from "People Other than Grunts" and refers to any non-combat non-boots-on-ground type of soldier.

I notice that YouTube have several Marines Shooting At Targets videos labeled something about "Pogues Play With M16s" (or something along those lines).

There's some great new stuff on there in the last few days.
Anyone know the date of the Live in Japan show?

The early footage of The Pogues in 1985 was great, Shane was in top form, as was the rest of the band. Spider must of had a fucking migraine, after beating his brains in with the beer tray, but that was once of the best attractions during the early live shows. My only complaint, was that the video cut off most of the Transmetropolitan song. Other than that great video.

Also, the Pogues performing White City and The Body of an American was great, especially White City, which was a hoot, because you can tell that Shane was completely hammered.

I recorded that programm myself when it was broadcasted on german television and Transmetropolitan got cut off there, too. I don't know of a version where the complete song is included.

Hey, man who cares, great early footage of The Pogues regardless. Still highly recommended
