Thanks Tom. I've seen the Dirty Old Town video before, but have always wondered one thing........following the second verse of this song when the string section kicks in, another gentleman seated is playing an instrument.............what is he playing? I saw Cirque du Soleil a few years ago, and they featured a solo with the same instrument. Beautiful sound.

Those are uillean pipes the Irish variant of bagpipes

I also like that sound more than the normal bagpipes and wanted to purchase one but they are really expensive

the gentleman (Tommy Keane) is playing the Uileann Pipes, the traditional Irish war pipes with equivalents in, among other cultures, Scotland and Northumbria. I first worked with Tommy in 1982 and 1983 when he made some records with The Peelers, a band I was then producing, so he was a logical choice for The Pogues. I also had Tommy play on some other tracks I produced, notably "Scarlet Ribbons" by the Men They Couldn't Hang and "Police And Thieves" by Niall MacMahon (father of Lila MacMahon who sang FONY on the Pogues 2001 tour).

Tommy now lives in Co Galway, I think, and has made at least one solo album of pipes music.

In case there's anyone left on earth who doesn't already know that James Fearnley is the baddest badass to have ever picked up an accordion, watching the "Fairytale" video should clear that right up for them.
