So some ponce of a DJ in England has decided to 'ban' Fairytale...not content with that, he has very publicly described it as 'offensive drivel'...what some people will do for a bit of fame, eh?

The Guardian still likes The Pogues. Fairytale made second place only, inexcusably and inexplicably, but nonetheless.

This is becoming as much an annual tradition as hearing the song itself.

He apparently described FTONY as downmarket chav bilge. I, and many others, had never heard of him prior to this, so he'll be pleased with the attention. He'll probably be less pleased that everyone considers him to be a twat.

“I think Christmas songs should be about excited children, toys, Christmas trees, snowy streets, ski lodges, reindeer, wrapping paper, Santa, family, peace on earth and love,” the DJ added. “I just find the Pogues’ ‘Fairytale of New York’ a nasty, nasty song.”

So we have two things here:

(1) He should try writing his own Christmas song(s). He clearly has something in mind and won't accept other visions. Maybe this is what makes him get a spark of creativity going.

(2) He's not wrong, exactly. FTONY IS a nasty song. That's the point, isn't it? That it's a couple that struggles with their demons but stays together in the end. It's a reflection of life, the good and bad, the stresses that a couple can go through.

The DJ would clearly prefer a confectioner's pastiche rather than a recognition that life isn't always grand. Opinions differ. Still - what a prick.
“I know all those people that were in the film [...] But that’s when they were young and strong and full of life, you know?”

"Is this what we want our kids singing in the back of the car?" Ours used to. Their performance was memorable. Though their version of Bottle of Smoke was maybe even more so . 8)

Here's another opinion:

On the topic of The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s signature hit, journalist Michael Hann said:

“There’s almost nothing left to be said about Fairytale of New York, a song that has been impossible to avoid for more than 30 years. Such is the strength of the songwriting and the grace of the performance that, despite the overexposure, it feels fresh every single time. That a scrappy folk-punk band produced something that will endure as long as Christmas itself is a real Christmas miracle.”

I encouraged the kids to sing along to Bottle of Smoke too, always with the proviso that they didn't take it to school.

Hello from New Zealand,

My name is Robert Calvin and I have been working as a Junior Tech Assistant in a company that provides services about Bridal. I don’t know if Mentioning the company is allowed or not. LOL.

I found one of the threads of this forum on google last night and I really like the way you guys helped each other. I feel like I also should make an account here, maybe I can help somebody. Or at least get some updated information about Bridal.

Radio 1 to air censored version of Pogues' Fairytale of New York
Offensive words in the Christmas song to be removed or altered for Radio 1, but remain unchanged on Radio 2...

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/nov/19/fairytale-of-new-york-pogues-censored-radio-1-radio-2

Radio 1 can feck right off, shower of fupping baxtards.

Though in reality, of course, the national debate about the lyrics of FoNY is a long-established seasonal tradition in the media here.

Snap, firehazard. 'Sensitive' listeners - fits right in with general BBC censorship.
