BBC makes film about "Fairytale of New York"

Post Sun Oct 16, 2005 3:24 pm

Hi friends

Just a note to mention that The Pogues have co-operated with a BBC production team who are making a film about "Fairytale Of New York" for broadcast at Christmastime 2005. Last year, the same team made a similar film about "Bohemian Rhapsody".

In addition to interviews with all 8 Pogues - especially, of course, the song's writers, Shane and Jem - the crew have also spoken to Nick Cave, Steve Lillywhite, Frank Murray (former Pogues manager), Fiachra Trench (who co-orchestrated the strings with James F), Peter Dougherty (he directed the promo vid), Matt Dillon and, I now hear, JP Donleavy, from whom we stole the title.

We got back together at Rak Studios in London last week to run through the song a couple of times for the cameras. None of us had been there since we recorded "Peace And Love" in 1989, so it was quite an odd sensation. On the one hand, you celebrate the fact that you're still around to commemorate making such a great record; on the other, the atmosphere is thick with the absence of cherished friends and colleagues especially, in this case, Kirsty MacColl and Rak Studios owner Mickie Most, who was there constantly during all our recording sessions at Rak, but died two years ago.

Anyway, keep an eye on the schedules Christmas Week. I'll post here as soon as I know the transmission date.

great news indeed Phillip, look forward to seeing the results.
I'm sure you all recognised it was a special track at the time but given it's stratospheric success it must still make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you think about it?

I was going to ask about how long the process of writing , recording & releasing took but i guess we'll just have to tune in @ Xmas to find out :D

Thanks for sharing the great news! :) Will be interesting to compare the new documentary with the RTE one. Wonderful Christmas gift. Just a pity that Kirsty cannot celebrate it too - Fairytale without her remains a great song but it misses much and will never be the same.

I think it will be an hour - not sure. No new recording was made - we figured we got it right last time.

May I take a wild guess and suggest the film will be screened on Christmas Eve ....(babe)

Will it outdo the Irish Fairytale doc of 2003???
