Whilst listening to the local radio station on my way to work, the presenter announced that he was doing a competiton to win two tickets to see Riverdance. All you had to do was ring up when you heard him play The Irish Rover by The Pogues.

I was gobsmacked because the only time they play The Pogues on local radio is at Christmas, every other time of year they play crap music and half the time I turn it off, I only really listen for the traffic reports and the weather forecast.

Just as I was getting into work, he played it and just at that very moment the signal on my radio decided to give up.

The only time that The Pogues ar played on local radio and I miss it. :(

Radio 2 had the Irish Rover on the Chris Evans show tonight! I wish he wouldn't talk over it though

A few years ago I was in a strip club in Tijuana, Mexico and one of the ladies danced to the version of "If I Should Fall From Grace" from the "Straight to Hell" soundtrack. I asked her what her name was and she said it was Maria and then danced to "Salsa y Ketchup." I then asked her where she first heard the Pogues and she said, "Who?" I was disturbed that this women would disrobe to the band that was not familiar with. Obviously taken aback, I said, " Would you like to explain yourself" and she got mad and stole my sneakers. A painful case all around.

Do you know if that was her selected song or was it a DJ playing the tune for the dancers? Were they locals or American dancers that dance and strip for the tourists? I would have found it odd to hear any Pogues in Mexico. That would make my night.

Hahaha, what a great story. Probably one best used in carefully chosen circumstances though. i.e. not when the inlaws are round for dinner!

The Wire

philofbelloni wrote:Apologies if you've seen this in another post but HBO's The Wire has featured Pogues tunes on several occasions. The last was a policeman's wake where cast members sang "Body of an American" over the dead detectives corpse. Moments later, cast member Bunk Moreland puked all over the sidewalk while Sally Mac blared in the background. Epic television moment.

At Kavanagh's Irish Pub, friends and fellow cops of the late Ray Cole gather to uphold a Baltimore police tradition: a final drink with their deceased friend. (Cole was played by the show's late executive producer Robert F. Colesberry and the character's wake was in part a tribute to the actor who portrayed him.)

* sadly, minus the Sally Mac puking scene...
Ah, stop that. You'll have my glass eye foggin' over.

Last night I went to a party where two people were celebrating their 45th birthdays. There was lots of 80ies music played, but the only Pogues song in between was "Thousands are sailing" which was very well received.

2 places

Walking thru the mall in King Of Prussia a few days after the Philadelphia show and I found myself singing along to the piped in music. I then realised it was Tuesday Morning, so bizarre.

Today on a Cadillac comercial, Sunnyside of the Street.

All so surreal.
