"Behind The Fairytale (of New York) - Saturday 24th December 10.00-11.00pm
Dermot O’Leary presents the moving and multi-layered story behind the Christmas classic Fairytale Of New York.
The song resonates with Irish history and the Irish folk tradition in songs - such as The Rare Mountain Dew and Galway Bay - and found further associations following the tragic death of Kirsty McColl in 2000 and the atrocities of 9/11, when it was adopted as an anthem by the New York Police Department. Written by Pogues frontman Shane McGowan and banjo player Jem Finer in 1987, the programme discovers how Kirsty McColl came to sing the vocals by accident, recalls public reaction (including a temporary ban on the lyric 'faggot') and assesses the lasting legacy of the song to this day...."
