Thank you. I had to resist the urge to point this out myself, lest anyone thought I was accusing Medusans of widespread piracy, which I'm certainly not. But it's a fact: punters can't demand free downloads and then complain when artists seek alternative revenue streams.

I won't complain about artists using advertising as a revenue stream, I don't see what the big deal is. But put out some new music and I will buy it. I promise not to demand a free download.

Smerker wrote:I dunno, I don't care enough about the advert issue one way or the other, but I do feel that it's possible for an artist to sell out, that a work could be debased by commerce. I don't think it's nonsense, I think it's a debate worth having.

The Doors are millionaire baby boomers and Jim Morrison was one of the biggest dicks alive, so I think that their opinions don't count for too much. However, as for the man who had his life saved by hearing Riders on the Storm, I do wonder if he'd feel embarrassed to hear it fifteen times a day, if that uncontrolled repetition would make the song mean less. That would be kind of sad.

Fair point I guess. I don't ever see myself being that guy, but I suppose he could exist.

That reminds me of the time I worked in a movie theater in the early 90s. back then we would run to open the door to the theater when the credits rolled to help the patrons out/get them to leave. My Own Private Idaho played there for a while and I would always go to catch the door quickly so I could hear The Old Main Drag. When The Bodyguard was playing I would stay as far away as possible so i didn't have to hear another second of that ubiquitous Whitney Houston song. I guess what I am saying is that for me, as long as I like the song I am more than happy to hear it again; but if it is a song I don't care for in the first place it can quickly become like nails on a chalkboard. This is a bit tangential to the selling out discussion, but there you go.

I say sell your music whatever way you can, while you can. Unlike Dennsmore, I remember a song playing during a particular memory in my life for the event in the memory itself not for the song.

If even the 'William Tell Overture' can be used to sell stuff, perhaps musicians shouldn't be so precious.
Of course it all depends on what it's selling.

All I know is that after spending five days in hospital waiting rooms and ICUs hearing If I Should Fall... blaring out of a TV via a Subaru commercial was a little respite from the drudgery of waiting on doctors...
