I saw that last night and it really pissed me off. I don't know if its quite as disgraceful as Country Butter, but its still sad to see.

Funny enough Mr Lydon has used almost every penny of the proceeds from that advert to reform PIL. Apparently the record companies wouldnt touch them and he had to fund the tour himself. Hes not stupid our John

I must admit to having a soft spot for Mr Lydon's butter ads. Even more so given the use the money went to. Not that I'd ever eat the stuff. Bad for the old cholesterol.

I am from Ireland, and I rate Mcgowan the same as I would Yeats!

But not highly enough to spell his name right!

The songs are not there to be revered by chin-strokers or to be put in a glass case and have sugar thrown at them. If they can make the Pogues a few quid, why not?

Meh. I think it's really cheesy and uncool for music I like to be used in adverts, but, hey, whatever. Musicians aren't going to be making money from record sales ever again.

Thank you. I had to resist the urge to point this out myself, lest anyone thought I was accusing Medusans of widespread piracy, which I'm certainly not. But it's a fact: punters can't demand free downloads and then complain when artists seek alternative revenue streams.

Can't say I have ever had a problem with songs being used in advertising. I actually like the Subaru ad and keep waiting for someone to mention how great that "new Subaru jingle" is so I can tell them "oh that tune is just one of many from the guys I keep flying all over the place to see, its about time you started appreciating good music".

I have yet to see the Subaru commercial here -- not sure south central Texas is a target market for hockey moms -- but I wish they would air it so I could tell people, that's by the band they've heard of from me, but never heard. And I think someone did a great job editing the footage to the music.

What I don't understand is; why take a song to use with lyrics that don't match up in any way, shape or form? I think Gridlock would make an excellent soundtrack to any car commercial, and there's any number of instrumental breaks that could be used. But it makes me smile.

Ooo! Girdlock or Metropolis would both be great! I like the way you're thinking.

I love how all 3 kids end up in the sin bin! Reminds me of the Hanson brothers from "Slapshot".

Reggie Dunlop: What are you guys doing?
Steve Hanson: Puttin' on the foil!
Jeff Hanson: Every game!
Jack Hanson: Yeah, you want some?

Mr. Chevron
You were posting about how The Pogues had now morphed into the American dream and I can't disagree with that. My only issue with the statement is that there is nothing new about it.
In the last 40 some odd years, I have lived all over the continental US. It's strange and cool how people from very different backgrounds not only like The Pogues, but the ones who are fans are rabid crazy about the music. Remove the modern US political landscape from the picture because it's pretty easy to understand why Pogues fans in the US love the band so much. The only issue in the US has been exposure. The Pogues forever seem to scare the hell out of radio programing suits. I hope the new commercial not only gives you guys a bit more exposure here but makes you a bit of cash as well. You have more than earned it.
P.S. Please come to Florida...we love you guys here!

If only we could. If only we could.

Of course, "Fall from Grace" is not the first mass-media exposure tune we've had, preceeded as it has been by "Sunnyside of the Street", "The Body of an American" and "Love You Till the End", none of which has gone on to make our fortune. I'll know America has taken us to its big blousy mama grizzly bosom for real the day "Fairytale of New York" transcends its "lyrics" issue and becomes as big a part of Christmas as, well, I'd settle for the Beach Boys.

Actually, i've just watched the commercial, and am wondering if maybe the checking & falling on the hockey rink & the wild celebrating aren't somehow related to the atmosphere of a Pogues gig, what with all the moshing & carryin' on? Maybe they shoulda used Fiesta.

But Metropolis, with a car snaking around the city? Why hasn't somebody thought of that? Quick, lets form an ad agency & make a million with that one! I've been watching Mad Men, I know what to do...
