Pogues Breaking Up Again?

The Pogues are to split again after one final festive tour.

The Fairytale of New York hitmakers will bid farewell to fans with a seven-date Christmas tour, which will conclude with two shows at London's O2 Academy in Brixton on December 20 and 21.

The band, fronted by Shane MacGowan, formed in 1982. MacGowan quit the group in 1991 and The Pogues split in 1996.

The original members reunited for a Christmas tour in 2001 and the band has been together ever since.

The current members of the fiery party band include Spider Stacy, Philip Chevron, Jem Finer and Andrew Ranken.

Former members include the late Joe Strummer and Elvis Costello's ex-wife Cait O'Riordan.

I did read and hear stuff that goes into this direction. (Spider writing "I for once can't wait until it's all over", although that could have ment a particular tour rather than a whole sort of split up of the band...) but it could be a trick from the management as well, because more people tend to think "Well if it's the last tour they'll ever play, I have to see it..." let's just hope that it won't be the last one  will be great anyway...last year was out of this world in London!

From http://pogues.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=176472#p176472

Spider Stacy wrote:I was gutted after that last US tour and very nearly left the band. I'm glad I didn't though, the summer shows have been really fun and I'm looking forward to the christmas tour. Now all we need is a new goal keeper at Arsenal and a hurricane free end to the summer for the Gulf coast. Not too much to ask surely?

The news are full of it. And it's just two days before tickets go on sale. What a coincidence.....

Come on guys, this is a load of rubbish, The Pogues ain't splitting up, they've only announced that the Christmas tour is the 'farewell Christmas tour' and everyone seems to be jumping to conclusions. Does not mean for one minute they won't be playing again, they have not said it was the final tour EVER, it only means it will be the final Christmas tour and even that's debateable.

And as for marketing ploy to sell the tickets, like someone suggested, what a load of crap, it's alll media hype.

Because Christmas in the UK has been cut by the baxtard ConDem coalition government, on account of the austerity.

No, actually, someone has actually suggested it here on this thread if you look hard enough.

Why is it crap? It's very certain that more people will think "Oh, it's their last tour and I didn't see them yet, so I will buy some tickets and go to the show before it's too late and I'll never see them..."

Philip Chevron even called it a "marketing ploy"...so it doesn't seem like "a load of crap" to me...

obviously, there are disagreements within the band about whether to continue or not and I might take the liberty to suggest that f.e. Spider wouldn't mind if the Christmas-Tour-Routine every year would stop. There have been several posts from him that show this quite a bit...anyway, just a suggestion. Peace!

Yes Philip did and I actually had forgotten that Philip had said that. And for the record that was not what I mean't when I wrote it and I'm not really sure why I wrote it, I was just a little peeved with people calling it the final tour and I mean't to say something else, but as usual I wrote the wrong thing. I'm not a bad person, I've always backed out of trouble, rightly or wrongly. I'm sorry if I've upset you.

Since it has now become common currency that I called the "Farewell" Xmas Tour "a marketing ploy", I think I can afford to be a little pedantic about this. What I actually typed was "You may consider it a marketing ploy if you wish."

Heather:

You didn't really upset me ;) It was just a theory I had in mind because of the title of this tour. Of course you can call it "crap" if you like, it probably is rubbish indeed :D I don't know...whatever it might be, it will certainly be a wonderful tour with many good times! I probably misinterpreted this "marketing ploy" which could be because I'm from Germany and therefor not able to perfectly understand the English language ^_^ ... I thought of "marketing ploy" as being some kind of "management trick" coming from the Pogues' manager to get more people buying tickets because of the tour being declared as the last one of the band. Anyway, I'm delighted that Mr. Chevron said something against it, so obviously not everybody within the band agrees on this subject. I just hope that THIS group will play many more shows in the future...I always think back about 3 years, when I discovered the Pogues, it fucking changed my life completely ;)

Peace and Love to all of you!
