Not early by date, but early by the hour. Heard this morning at 6.55am on BBC Cambridgeshire, while waiting for news of the snow and local travel chaos. All a tad surreal.

Heard Fairytale in Clinton Cards today whilst moaning to myself about shelling out four quid for a christmas card. Went to the pub at lunch today and heard Streams of Whiskey which was a welcome surprise.

The Rage Against the Machine campaign to stop the X Factor single making the UK Christmas Number One has, amazingly enough, succeeded. Which means that, as expected, the winner of the the Chart Battle is ............ Sony Music, which owns both records.

Fairytale maintained its #18 position of last week, on its seventh separate appearance in the UK Top 40 in 22 years.

I think that may be connected to the cover version by the cast of Glee?

Also, I'm noting an interesting new entry at # 40 and I draw attention to it entirely without comment.

This pretty much leaves me without words.

The Glee cover must have been truly inspirational.

Yes well, the X Factor cover of Miley Cyrus's "The Climb" also appears to have propelled Miley Cyrus back to the listings. Who knows what gets into people's heads. I don't suppose we should be surprised that SuBo has done nothing for the sales of either Gram Parsons or the Rolling Stones.

Rage Against The Machine at no.1 with "Killing In The Name"
Do anyone know the reason?
It's a fantastic song but it's from 1992 :?

There was a concerted Facebook campaign to get music lovers to download the Rage track (at 29p a time, about 20c) and deliberately halt the apparently inexorable rise to No. One of the X Factor thingy. There were cynics among us who noted that both tracks belonged to Sony Records, who therefore found themselves in a win-win situation, but all the same, it was a legitimate blow against the hegemony of Simon Cowell, who did not even have the good grace to see the funny side. First I realised the Rage campaign was going to succeed was when I mentioned the campaign to Martin McDonagh on Thursday evening when we were at the theatre together. He knew about it and casually informed me he had just downloaded the Rage track that day. This was no Oasis v Blur hype, it was a legitimate people-led blow against Cowell-processed dross. A rage against The Machine, even.

In the process, I heard the Rage track for only the first time, knowingly at least, and was delighted to find I really liked it. Objectively, the X Factor single is just sludge.

It's a fantastic Anti-Racist song.
Nice to hear that Simon "I'm the centre of the world" Cowell got beaten by a Rage-song :)
I think I will rename him to "Simon Cowbell"

Living in the US and being a fan of "alternative" radio, I can't imagine hearing that song for the first time (again). It is pretty good. Great swagger.

Brief excerpt from Zach's (de la Rocha - Rage's singer) Wikipedia enrty:

De la Rocha's father, Roberto "Beto" de la Rocha, played an integral part in his son's cultural upbringing. Beto was a muralist and member of Los Four — the first Chicano art collective to be exhibited at a museum (LACMA, 1973). De la Rocha's grandfather was a Sinaloan revolutionary who fought in the Mexican Revolution and an agricultural laborer in the US. Later, de la Rocha would see the hardships his grandfather endured reflected in the struggles of the Zapatistas (also known as EZLN).

When de la Rocha was a year old, his parents separated. He and his German-Irish mother, Olivia de la Rocha, moved from East Los Angeles to Irvine, California, where she attended the University of California at Irvine and earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology. Zack described Irvine as "one of the most racist cities imaginable. If you were a Mexican in Irvine, you were there because you had a broom or a hammer in your hand." It was also at an Irvine grade school, where young Zack met his friend and future bandmate, Tim Commerford.

To my knowledge, I think there were two, significantly smaller campaigns to get the Journey track to number one, and also "Surfin Bird" :? odd.

Well done to the Band - no 12 - up 6 since last week! FONY doesn't seem to have much air play this year still it's great to see the song well into in the top 20. Really enjoyed the show at Brixton last Saturday, you boys get better each year, thank you all for the wonderful music, very pleased to hear Lullaby of London and all my other favourites. Would be great if there was a show in the UK or Ireland during the Spring or Summer.
