I read that somewhere as well a while back and believed it was wrong but did not dispute it at the time.

I know the mp3 for Body of an American at least is out there, you can even hear Rob Lowe say, "The Pogues!" just before the song starts. I would guess the third song would show up as well, but if it never gets shown perhaps not.

I actually recorded the show to VHS when it first aired but the quality was not good and I think I must have lost the tape in college.

I'm pretty certain that only "Body of an American" and "White City" were actually aired live.

I'm probably wrong though.

DzM: I think that Battle Of Brisbane was played. But this song was not aired for some strange reason.

This performance is sometimes mentioned as an example of how Shane MacGowan was increasingly out of control and almost unable to perform but that's a bit unfair, don't you think? Both White City and Body Of An American are good performances.

Yeah, I thought they were great too. It WAS hard to make out the words, but that's not that unusual for live broadcasts, especially if you're watching on a $29 black and white tv with a single 3" speaker like I was. Shane was mumbling for sure on "White City", but he wasn't falling-down out-of-control wiped-out or anything.

I watched the SNL "Body of an American" performance last night, thanks to a friend who'd taped it from a Comedy Central re-run. It's a wonderful performance. Not only can you get just about every word, it's one of the few performances I've heard/seen of this where Shane gets all the words exactly as in the original. Everyone looks and sounds great, particularly Philip, who is as sharply turned out as you could want. Definitely a proud moment.

I believe it was the "Drinking and Fighting Song," and the lyrics went something like: "Wellllll we'llllll drink and drink and drink and drink and drink and drink and drink, and we'llllll fight and fight and fight and fight and fight and fight and fight!" (repeat) Quality early Mike Myers.

Unfortunately, they don't have the lyrics posted at the snl transcripts site, although they do have transcripts for some of the skits:

Haha, that's one of the earliest songs I discovered that I thought was by the Pogues.

"Well we'll drinkanddrinkanddrinkanddrinkanddrinkanddrinkandfight" etc.... funny song, sorta catchy too...

Where is the SNL clip of "The Battle of Brisbane"?

Post Thu Mar 29, 2007 6:51 pm

Does anyone know where to find this rare and possibly banned clip from Saturday Night Live? YouTube seems to have removed it from their site and google doesn't even produce a lead...
Can it be that NBC has successfully erased it from history?!

Anyone got the scoop on this?

This again? I honestly don't think we did "Battle Of Brisbane" for SNL, but it was St Patrick's Day and I was ver ver drunk, so I can't say for certain. I do know we were not playing "Battle" in the set at that point, so it seems likely that if we were ever going to launch into an instrumental for whatever reason, it would have been "Repeal", which has almost never NOT been in the show. However, to the best of my knowledge, we played only "White City" and "Body Of An American".

On the wider issue of YouTube, I hear rumblings that quite a lot of videos are being gradually removed as the copyright laws close in on them, though I am not up to speed with this story. Don't be too sad - a blow against freedom of broadcast is also, in this instance, a blow against Rupert Murdoch's bank balance.

This is a quote from the front page of the discography section of this same site:

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
(Live)
The Pogues were the musical guests on Saturday Night Live on St. Patric's Day, 1990 (guest host was Rob Lowe). They performed White City, The Body of an American, and The Battle of Brisbane. The show is sometimes rebroadcast, though typically The Battle of Brisbane is cut.

(1990) NBC

Yes, but I'm probably wrong.

I believe I got that information from some UseNet post back in the 1990s. Who knows how correct it is?
