The Session: The Pogues & The Dubliners Full Show (RTÉ 1987)

Post Tue May 16, 2017 12:35 pm

From the 1987 Show The Session on RTÉ (featuring Joe Strummer as Special Guest).

I recorded this from the Irish Language Station TG4 on the 17th/18th March 2017 (when it was repeated). Took me a while to remove the adverts but it's the whole show.

Hope all my fellow Pogues fans enjoy this.

Great job! It's times like this I sorely miss Philip. I'd love to hear his remembrances of this.

I have to admit that part of the fun in watching this is the crowd shots. We wore very, very silly clothes in the 80s.

Speak for yourself. My vestments were just as cool as they are now.

As I remember it, our hair was even sillier than our clothes (or vestments). And bigger. Though the clothes were smaller.

Thanks for the link.

Cheers for the link

That Polo shirt of Shane's is a pressers nightmare.
But I want Jem Finer`s check shirt , if only to make the leprechauns proud.

Really good to hear The Dubliners again as well..

In re-watching this I notice that at the beginning it felt very much like this was a pantomime to pre-recorded tracks. Then I noticed that later on it seemed not to be pantomimed. I've finally come to the conclusion that there's an audio/video sync problem early on that makes it look like Shane's mouth movements don't match the audio. No pantomime! I think. Probably!

Great stuff, I have seen a few clips from this before but good to see the whole thing without ads.

If I remember correctly, James's account of this in his book mentions that there was quite a session after this session which ended up with various members of the Dubliners falling far from the wagon that that they had been on for many years.

As for hair, mine looks better now than it did then despite no longer having any.

I have a feeling that was the infamous Tom O'Connor road show (I maybe making this up) where they all got invited up to the mayors chambers and drank him dry. He eventually chased them and two of them tried (one pogue one dubliner) tried to drive back to Dublin only getting about five yards.

Quite possibly, I think it was mentioned in James's book.

I won't have a chance to watch until Sunday, just curious what songs they played besides Irish Rover (and I am correct in saying this is a different show than the Irish Rover video on Youtube?)

Thanks kahaya!

Thanks so much for sharing this! I actually have this on DVD, a rip of a copy of a copy of a VHS or something... needless to say this is much better quality.
