Great Big New Software

Post Wed Jan 30, 2008 3:15 am

The forum software has just gone through a major upgrade. This inevitably means that lots of things that used to work probably no longer do. If you find things, please let me know.

In the meanwhile here's some things that are cool that you might like:

UPDATE: Here's a little clarification on where Friends and Foes are identified. In your User Control Panel (upper left of your browser window) is a tab labeled Friends & Foes. In this tab you can enter the names of people you want to pay special attention to or want to ignore. You can ALSO add people on a one-by-one basis by visiting their profile (easiest way is to click on their name or avatar next to a post), then click the appropriate link in the profile (the two to look for at the mysteriously labeled "Add Friend" and "Add Foe"). ... Hmm. Maybe someday we can have a "People Love Me THIS MUCH score based on some value balancing how many people Friend and Foe you. Hmmmmmm. No way that'll lead to hurt feelings and sulking.

Friends: These are people you like. The forum will now make a special effort to highlight messages from people that you have "friended." This feature doesn't yet do much, but please mark people you like as "Friends" anyway. At some point Medusa will somehow arrange for everyone to get a group hug from their friends.

Foes: These are people you don't like. Place someone in your enemies list if you no longer want to see messages from them (note that you will still their words if they are quoted in another user's message, and also note that no matter how badly you may want to you are not able to ignore the site janitors)

Report: That's the little "yield" sign you see on messages. Gives you the chance to sort of anonymously rat-out your fellow raft dwellers. This will let the Janitors know that this message is for some reason in need of special attention.

Other stuff: There's just a lot of other stuff. Some good, some crappy. Explore. Also click on the "User Control Panel" that you see on the upper left of the page. That's where you do exciting things like manage your preferences.

The Medusa theme is as yet incomplete and still looks a lot like ass (or arse). I'm working on it, but figured that it was evolved enough to no longer wait on rolling out the new software.

Danke. Still a lot of work to do, but it's a good start.

Nice sleek look, DzM. I wonder how quickly I'll be on everyone's ignore list?

Now, how about the ability to login when replying? I hate going backwards to login to post instead of being able to login as I reply..

Smilies not working?????

EDIT: All the formatting tools (Italics, etc) seem FUBAR at the moment (at least on my work computer), and I can't highlight blocks of text for italicizing, cut-paste, etc in the formatting window.

Wow. I think I can get used to it, but the brain is not yet comfortable with it. Kind of like getting in a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side. And then trying to drive in traffic.

If you have any control over the background color, may we please have the ecru again? pretty please? :) {can't find emoticoms}

Looking good, though. Ecru would be nice, but this color scheme is OK by me (not that it matters).

Clicking on "The Pogues" home link in the top left corner doesn't seem to be working. I tend to use it to bounce around the rest of the site.

A trifle, but I thought it worth mentioning. Have to say it'll take some getting used to, but the new features look good. Nice work.

Yes, despite initial confusion, and the fact I can't use smilies after that last phrase, I like, I like.

The BBCode and smiley (or Smilie) buttons now work as expected. w00t.

UPDATE: At least one or two people have complained directly to me of the dreariness of the theme (that's "decoration of the page" to you non-nerds out there) in use right now.

Please be assured that this is a rough draft. It IS changing. Over the next many days and months the colors and layout of various elements will change to things that have better definition and clarity. I promise.
