Re: The Acceptable Conversation Topic Thread

jennylois wrote:Well Pyro, why do you think that my post was moved to such an inappropriate thread? What is your answer? And I noticed that in the Hogs thread, when posts were moved recently, Zuzana posted the reason and where it had been moved to. That same consideration is not given to everyone. Pyro, you just called me weird (for what reason, you don't know me) and you were very offensive to Gurrier as well. Don't know why you can't discuss things like an adult instead of resorting to name calling.

Well, for the first time, posts were moved from Hogs to Guitar and I haven´t been told - nothing wrong about that. The message about moving the thread appeared a month after. I don´t say it´s good to move your posts to different (and impropriate topic) without telling anyone, but calling our mods smartass and that stuff about conspiracy smelled of bullshit to me.

Besides, those posts are deleted, or moved again, but if I remember, it was something along "I went shopping to a mall"...Medusa is Phpbb: Php Bulletin Board. Not PhpC: Php Chat.

I didn´t say you were weird, for that, I don´t know you well enough, true. I said I thought you were weird. I´m sorry if it sounded too offensive - I admit that since english is not my primary language, I may not understand subtle varietes. On the other hand, I hate "political correctness", I think things should be sorted out straight. What I ment by "weird" was, that your posts seemed out of the place to me, that´s all really.

Indeed, I were offensive to Guerrier. Since mods and DzM are too kind. I really hate this anti-mod and anti-DzM mood, which sprung up in late months, especially when it´s not backed up by arguments. For example, your case is different - it´s not up to me to judge if that certain mod made a mistake, but if he did, it´s an argument. But Guerrier´s posts were provocative and unreasonable (and in the past too). Instead of being grateful we´ve got so tolerant janitorial crew, people bitch about it. I find that insulting too, towards DzM, Zuzana and MacRua.

And now, a philosophical-rhetorical "question". People complain about oppression of freedom here. Look at Euroamerican civilization, where it has been driven by freedom. Is the region good, is it all right? I doubt anyone would think so. The thing is, you don´t need to be completely free to be happy. But once people get freedom, they don´t want to give up.

I believe, if certain people (and I´m indeed not pointing at anyone) were banned, there would be no such problems. But since general banning mood is very tolerant, people start (even non-consciously) misuse that. Don´t tell me, that on most fora, posts like Guerriers would stay on the board. They wouldn´t - they would leave, and their author would quickly follow. If there would be no Guerrier, we wouldn´t be these problems. It smells by SSSR, to remove those, who are not "good", but in SSSR, you often couldn´t leave, and you were killed (it´s not that simple, true, but it´s ment generally). Here, you can leave, it´s not your life, what is threatened, and we´ve got more reasonable leaders than Stalin. And removing people should be discussed here, I believe. Or judged by mods. If mods are idiots, power-oriented maniacs, people won´t stay here - so people, who don´t like it here, go elsewhere, make new forum and enjoy it! Besides, part of people posts almost exclusively in Speakers Corner, which should be, logically, periphery of Medusa.

It´s the same with chilren - if they give them too much freedom and don´t show them the path (at least at the beginning), unless they´re true angels (Clash Cadillac's children sound as such), they won´t enjoy it, and when you try to nurture them after that, it will be much more difficult.

Besides, I don´t remember myself calling you by your name (which I don´t know).

And to matter of discussing stuff as adults - I´m afraid our definiton of adulthood is not the same. If my posts are moved, I´d consider adult to write about it in gentle way (we all make mistakes), or PM DzM or something like that. I´m afraid your post was at the opposite end of adulthood.

Philip, my post on Acceptable Threads was a joke. I was being sarcastic in light of what was going on in that thread. It was supposed to be there. I wasn't really complaining that I had a bad trolley. I didn't have any trolley in fact. Some of us just have a different sense of humour I guess, and maybe that is what the problem is.

Ever the philanthropist and philosopher. Did you write that quote, SF? I like it.

Oh if only I had half the wit to think up such a thing. It too is Orwell. From the preface to Animal Farm.

Are you familiar with the anglo saxon colloquialism - "off her / his trolley"?

I had always thought it was from 1984. Winston writing in his diary. I need to brush up on my Orwell.

I'm pretty sure it's Animal Farm but am embarrassed to say that my books are out of order on my shelves and it's not there for me to check. I am torn between the offence that this causes my mild OCD everything in order trait and pride that one of the offspring has been choosing to read Orwell. :? :?

:)

The Internets back you up, that it's from Animal Farm.

I also take a certain pleasure that Google now returns this page on Medusa as the second hit for that phrase:

You should never chuck a spanner in the works. It fucks it up, all the cogs grinding together, like a woman trying to put her car into reverse.

There's no pleasure in having it confirmed by the web. The daughter who currently has a flea in her ear is trying to remember where she put my book.

Oh and er Medusa Rocks.

And addressing the other points on this topic

Post Mon Apr 21, 2008 8:10 pm

Regarding Gurrier's earlier points: I've never claimed that the Janitors, or myself, are perfect. I also don't think we've ever been the giant hypocrites you think we are. We provide a free service, and we do our best to make sure a large amount of freedom and discretion given to people, that people don't engage in mob lynchings, and that the fora are as widely enjoyable as possible. We use our best judgment to enforce an indefinable standard and, for the most part, the community of users sees what we're trying to do and cooperates. Sometimes we get it wrong, but in general I think we've struck a good balance.

We are also people with our own opinions, and senses of humor, and likes and dislikes. We are as free to express those as you are yours, and we hold ourselves to a high standard (I think we remove more of our own Janitor's messages than we do actual user's). If you don't see that due to the size of the chip on your shoulder, there's nothing I can do about that. You'll just have to go on making me your proxy for every authority figure you've ever felt powerless to act out against.

Regarding Pyro's points: Yes, we could crack down harder on disruptive people, but I find forums that are that controlled to be stifling. Variety is the spice of life and conversation. We could also require moderator approval of all threads and/or posts, we could remove guest posting privileges, etc. The other Janitors and myself do not want to be cops or editors; we want to be facilitators. We will resist, as much as possible, any change in policy that makes us any more authority figures than we already are.

We always welcome constructive (even if critical) discussion about how we can improve this place. We will listen to and consider suggestions, and if needed we will explain why we do things the way we do. Sometimes we'll make changes, sometimes we won't.

Ultimately we will do our best to run this place for the common good. If anyone feels that we are towering examples of hypocrisy, or tyrants, or damned fools with delusions of grandeur - we're not holding you here. As I said earlier, this is a fan site run by fans. It is one of several fan sites, and one of hundreds of social networking sites. If our efforts are too badly out of line with what the broader community wants, then we deserve to go out of "business." If our efforts are too badly out of line, please show us how to do it right. Otherwise stop bitching and help us make this place better.

Nothing about that. Just that we've managed to use the phrase so many times on a single page, and the Google spider has been so aggressive indexing it, that we've managed to do something that there's a small industry built around - Search Engine Optimization, or SEO. There's a lot of people that pay a lot of money for what we've just done. We're marketing GENIUSES! :)

As my old fella always says..."There's no prizes for second place".

If freedom of speech means anything at all, it is the freedom to say things that people do not want to hear.

Wonder if that'll do it?!?
