Don't know what's happening tonight, but I keep finding that I've been logged out and have to log myself back in again.

I've not actually logged myself out at any point, it just seems to happen on it's own.

Could be that your browser is holding onto corrupt cookies (this is how session is tracked).

On the bottom right of this page is a link that says "Delete all board cookies". Bonk on that, then login again, and see if the behavior goes away.

I'm getting use to the new format and bells and whistles. All very intimidating at first. :|

Those just indicate various types of topics. Big one with text is a topic. Big one with text that's red is hotter. Big one with scrolling text is popular. Etc etc.
Mostly just eye candy.

YUM !

Alrighty - Here's a little more for you:

Red colored means that there are posts in there that are considered new.
An asterisk on the icon means that you have posted somewhere in that thread.
A round text icon with a small one inserted on the lower right means that that forum has sub-forums in it.
Etc.

The older I get the less I like change.
I don't do change very well.
I keep telling my wife that is a good thing.

However, I am liking the changes here on The Medusa Fora. Great job DzM.

Unless I've gone stupid again. Which is always possible.

Those links are currently MIA. They will return soon.

The links are now returned. The header image now links to the front page. The general Medusa links have returned to the bottom of the page.

Mods, the (pardon my French) anal-retentive subsections (Politics, Food and Drink, ad nauseum) seem a tad confining and require an unseemly amount of clicking back and forth.

Not to mention that threads can morph quickly, and one's intended purpose in starting a thread may not have much to do with the whole Gestalt of the thing as it grows and changes.

God, I've turned into a whiny little malcontent.......

Meh. It's a shiny new feature. I want to try it out. Either it'll work out nicely, or it won't. Time will tell.

I'm not afraid of change. Why are you?

[Update]
I suppose I should add that in a slightly less cheeky way these sub-fora are meant to actually HELP the threads/topics that live within them.

In the general "Speaker's Corner" that are generally four pages of topics. Usually all but the first page (most recently posted to 50) are neglected and just waiting for their clock to run out before auto-pruning happens.

By having high-level themed sub forums people interested in a particular subject can more quickly and easily find older threads/topics that may be of interest and resurrect/keep them alive by posting to them rather than starting a new thread/topic.

Sub-fora ALSO should help people more easily avoid off-topic conversation they want nothing to do with (I can't tell you how often over the last several years people have drunkenly slurred at me "I just don't know why on a Pogues forum so much conversation is dedicated to non-Pogues stuff like sports and politics. I wish there was a way for me to easily not have to ever see that stuff." and I've ahd to drunkenly slur back "Do you happen to know why I'm not wearing pants, or where I left them, or if I enjoyed losing them?"). Don't like sports? Good enough. Never go into that sub-forum. Bam! Problem solved.

It's also (in my opinion) an opportunity for these obviously popular subjects to flourish. For better or worse, many of the past threads/topics dedicated to these subjects have been forcibly combined into single long, long trains of thought. Now it's much easier for sport fans to dedicate a thread/topic to their favorite team, or food junkies to dedicate a thread/topic to Gouda, etc. It's a way for us (we Janitors) to be less anal about keeping like subjects confined to a single thread/topic.

And finally, it gives us (the current Janitors) the opportunity to explore delegating mod-duties for an entire class of messages that we may not have the time or interest to moderate ourselves. I know nothing of Football/Celtic Games/Soccer (or American Football for that matter) and don't want to have to moderate that discussion. A sub-forum for Sport will give us the opportunity to have people active within those conversations assume local moderation duties and free the Janitors up to think of more exciting ways to make everyone angry, buy torches, etc.

At any rate - it's an experiment. We'll see how it goes. If it ends up really sucking then we can roll back to the old system.

As if!

Bring on the change (I seem to recall praising the new look), but don't change for change's sake.

I just kind of liked to serendipitous grab-bag of Speaker's Corner. You never knew what might be at the top or what thread was on fire.

Also, the gentle reader has to decide in advance the topic in which he/she might be interested, and must, while browsing, bounce back and forth between the index and the subtopics to get the full picture of the glory that is Speaker's Corner.

I can see the attraction of many subtopics, and if the extra clicks weren't required I think I could even come to like it, but clicking around the subtopics just isn't as attractive.

Aha! It seems you are not the stalwart Bonker Of Random Links I thought you were. Let me introduce you to a few:

The New Posts canned search nicely shows you a single list of each thread/topic that has new posts since you last visited. Forum and Sub-Forum be damned! They're all right there.

View active topics (new in this version of the software) will show you all the topics that are esploding with fun regardless of the forum. As long as there has been activity the thread/topic is listed here.

And once the RSS feeds are working again you can simply subscribe to them and get a time-sorted view of each new post regardless of what forum. Great for subscribing to in any RSS feader including Firefox, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Safari, Google Reader, some kinda Yahoo! service, etc.

Been figuring out most of these myself except one: what's with the lightbulb shaped icon? An admin created one?
