e.g. I post on the temporary server, but the posts are killed when the regular one is back.
Short answer:
Your posts during the transition will continue to haunt you for years to come.
Long answer:
1) The temporary server (Server B) is brought online. It will have a complete copy of the data currently on this server (Server A).
2) DNS records are changed to point to Server B rather than Server A.
3) Server A will have the database changed to read only preventing new data from being posted to it.
4) As the DNS changes propagate you will slowly find yourself being directed to Server B and able to post (unless you're looking at IP addresses you really shouldn't see a difference).
5) I will then take a weekend road-trip to retrieve Server A from its current home in Portland, OR.
6) I'll perform some much needed hardware and OS updating to Server A.
7) Server A will be brought back online at the new colo facility (only two hours from my house instead of the current 10+ hours). All data will be transferred from Server B to Server A.
8) Server B will be shut down and the IP address reassigned to Server A.
9) There will be rejoicing in the streets, rainbows will cover the sky, and fluffy bunnies will romp through the green fields with unicorns. Why? Because clearly steps 1 through 8 happened in some kind of alternate universe where everything goes smoothly and according to plan rather than this universe where things explode and I get annoyed and end up spending many, many days not sleeping as I try to fix whatever blew up.
Ta-da!
