Outage Nov 11

Post Tue Nov 12, 2013 4:46 am

The fora were down for an hour or two in the evening (Pacific time) of Nov 11. This was entirely my fault and stemmed from a ham-fisted attempt to address some of the performance problems we've been having recently. Sorry about that.

Lesson learned? Don't just shrug and say "Yeah, what the hell - upgrade everything in production. Screw testing it first. What's the worst that could happen?"

So - Other than the several hour "oh crap - broke everything" aspect of the changes, things now appear to have settled into vastly improved performance (if people are still sporadically seeing Medusa appear to "hang" for five minutes or longer at a time, please let me know. I've been watching for it and haven't seen it, but it's possible I've missed something.)

In my ongoing quest to break everything by "making it better" I'll be updating the forum software tonight or tomorrow. My expectation is that the change will be invisible to all of you. The reality is that it'll probably break everything for several hours and I'll spend a lot of late-night hours trying to unbugger things. So ... sorry about that.

Sadly time to break things hasn't presented itself yet. Maybe this afternoon.

The spam you've seen is from a particularly persistent spammer. They began posting on Nov 3. They have had 10 messages appear in the forum, and they have had 112 messages blocked. Not much to be done for it other than for myself or Zuzana to remove them when they get through. Hopefully the update (see above) will fix some of the currently broken filtering tools.

The fora software has been update. A spot check (meaning "pages seem to load") has been done, but I'm positive there is a lot of opportunity for breakage to have happened. Please let me know if you see or notice badness.

As I skimmed this post and read about load and breakage I couldn't help but think you were discussing prophylactics.

I've also taken this opportunity to further bork things. For those of you (by which I mean "me") that use the RSS/Feed capability the URL has changed to:

http://www.pogues.com/forum/feed.php

Please update your readers as appropriate. And as always let me know if something broke.
