Things slow? Crappy? Five days of posts missing? OH NOES!

Post Wed Dec 02, 2009 12:33 am

So here's a funny story, see ... It turns out that Doing Dumb Things can cause massive outage and five day's worth of lost data.

The odds are pretty good that anything posted in the last five days (since Oct 26) is now gone forever. I'll do what I can to find hidden caches of stuff and bring it back, but maybe we're better off just thinking of this as a Clean Slate.

Sorry gang. I suck. I'm going to go back to heavy drinking before doing sys-admin stuff. That seems to be less dangerous then when I do it sober.

Alrighty. The post data still exists. Sort of.

If you made any posts that you absolutely HAVE to have restored you can do it like this:

  • Register for a Google account
  • Go to the Google Reader application ( http://www.google.com/reader/ )
  • Subscribe the the Medusa RSS feed (bonk on the Add Subscription button, then enter the URL quoted below
  • On the right and just above the part of the window (in the blue bar) click the "Show: List" link
  • Then use the scroll bar to scroll to the bottom of the list pain; you'll notice that as you approach the bottom older posts are added to the list.
  • Proceed in this way until you find post you want
  • Copy/Paste, etc as though you were creating a new Medusa post

Now I'm off to find those Spider posts and restore them.

Oh! I should also mention that while the missing posts are the most obvious sign of an emergency restore-everything-from-a-backup, you should also be aware that any PMs sent since Nov 26 are also lost to the ether. If you sent something Super Duper Important and are unsure of the recipient received it, then you should send it again just to be certain.

Thanks as always for your diligence under the hood, DzM. It's always good when the mechanic can explain just what that noise was under there...this IS covered under warranty, right?
...ain't it funny how you used to know everybody in these parts...

As bad as it seems to you, DZM, it's really just a bunch of chatting. We continue to salute you for keeping this thing going for so long. Lots of times these sites just dry up due to lack of involvement. Keep on keeping on. 8)

DzM, if you can find a spare moment, It would be great if you could restore Philip's reviews on the "Going to the Theatre" thread. I would also like to give thanks and praise for all your hard work.

As far as I can see all the reviews are there. The most recent is Oleana. Post Nov 26 I fin some chatting about a book (links to used copies, etc), but no more reviews. Since the restoration process is very manual and very tedious I chose not to restore the book chatting, but if people are wanting that exchange I can invest a few minutes in it. Other than that - are you aware of any other reviews that happened post Nov 26?

All I can recall is a fairly perfunctory report on Turandot at ENO, London

OK, I've restored Clash Cadillac's final post with links to the book and quotes to posts now lost:

viewtopic.php?p=168891#p168891

It seems as though the Turandot review didn't get slagged by Google. I'll see if I can find it anywhere else.

UPDATE: Aha! Google Reader may not have snagged it, but the Google Search engine did. Post restored.

"Tidying." That's what my dear mother told me it was when she informed me that she'd thrown out my big box of original 1960s Spider-Man comics that had been safely stored for years at the old parental house. "You'll thank me for it one day," she said.

Except, DzM, I'm sure this time there's nothing been lost that will really be missed. Thanks as ever for all the good work. 8)
