FYI - On the spam-fighting front we are now also taking advantage of publicly posted IP lists of known spammers. This mean we've gone from a blacklist of ~390 known (to us) spammers to ~12000 (known to various public spam buckets) spammers. This means that some of you (who, of course, won't be able to see this message) will be blocked.

If you think this is affecting you, please let me know (the effect you will see is "Server could not be contacted" errors from your browser rather than Medusa saying you're banned - there is a difference, and the two should not be confused).

I thought Captchas was the new ADF album...
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior
Shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back out and shout
"Let's have another round!"

All - We've been seeing more and more spam coming into Medusa over the last two months. We've been handling it manually, but the volume is getting to the point where it is no longer easy to manage it.

Today I've installed software that should automate management of the spam, but this also means that it can easily automate being an obstruction to legitimate posts, registration, etc. Please let me know if things become broken. Thanks!

Probably. And the "No permission" and "Delete this directory" and various other random strange messages you may have seen.

Yay!

The spam software has been updated so that registered users are now treated differently than guest users. This means that those of you that have been here for a while can again post things like "XXX" and "cigarettes" and "hot teen sex" without having the post require janitor approval.

Guest User posts will be scrubbed through the List Of Common Spam Words. If any are found then a Janitor must approve or deny the post.
Newly Registered Users have a certain super-secret threshold number of posts that will also require Janitor approval if common Bad Words are found.
After Registered User passes the secret threshold their posts will no longer by scrubbed against the common Bad Words list.

With luck this will allow us to continue to shield your delicate eyes from anonymous unsavory things, but you will still be titillated by properly credited unsavory things.

Rawk on!

Hot teen donkey sex XXX would have caused a PM not to be accepted. Now it will (the difference between how the PM is handled is that posts go to a Janitor for approval, PMs don't. PMs are private and should not have Janitors looking at them.).

Today I hooked up the fora to an external spam checker and have turned off the Captcha. This is a generally better solution to what we were doing be assuming this is effective at blocking spam AND does not cause posting problems for you registered users wanting to talk about Hot Teen Viagra Donkey Porn XXX.

Well poop. That didn't work out as well as I'd hoped. Captchas are back.
