Post Wed Oct 28, 2015 3:54 pm

LONDON CELTIC PUNKS and URBANKELT presents
THE POGUE TRADERS LIVE AT THE WATER RATS
with THE POGUES Christmas shows seemingly now part of history we know you all miss a good auld Pogues yuletide pissup so hows about the UK's Number One Pogues tribute band THE POGUE TRADERS live at the very venue that The Pogues actually had their first ever gig!
And its not just a marketing ploy to describe them as the UK's best Pogues tribute band - that's what The Pogues own drummer Andrew Ranken said about the POGUE TRADERS
https://www.facebook.com/poguetraders
ably supported by
COMRADE X
one man whirlwind of numerous influences and traditions best described as "Woody Guthrie meets Oi!". One geezer, one guitar, three chords and the truth.

ANTO MORRA
London Irish singer-songwriter documenting the existance of the London Irish and working class community he comes from. In the best tradition of Irish music with elements of Luke Kelly to Brendan Behan.

Situated just a couple of minutes walk from Kings Cross station so perfect for loads of rail and tube links and with the music set to finish around 11-30pm you will be able to get back to anywhere in London or further afield.

The bar will stay open a little longer and we will have MR GREENFORD BHOY dj'ing all your favourite celtic-punk, Irish, Punk and rebel tunes until we are shown the door.

Admission is only a fiver so you'll already be saving £30 on the real band!

Could be fun... good start to the Christmas season, failing the real thing. Anyone from the raft going? The Water Rats could be the perfect venue.

We were discussing it last night and both of us would like to go, but bearing in mind I've seen some large queues outside of there when other bands have been on and it looks like a pay on the door gig, do we take the chance and book train tickets, hotel room etc?

I agree with Christine, it's the ideal venue but it isn't very big and that means that there's a very big chance that we get there and won't be able to get in and that would be very disappointing.

I really don't know what to do about this one.

IN cases where we dont sell tickets we usually operate a name at the door policy. So don't worry we will put your names at the door so whatever happens you will be able to get in. Usually we don't need to!!!!!!
So simply join the Event page and send us a message and all will be ok.

Now that's the old raft doing her job again. Kick ass.

I don't think it's worth starting a meet-up thread for this so I will do it on this thread.

There's a pub across the road (and down a bit) called The Lucas Arms where we go sometimes when we're in London because they sell reasonably cheap good food. I suggested to Christine last night on Facebook that we could possibly meet in there.

It would be handy if anyone wants anything to eat as well as a good meet up place. I know they serve meals until about 9pm during the week but not sure about a Sunday.

Remember Gurrier? Well he's down as going.

I think I'll FB message him and see if he actually is.

This was The Pogue Trader's first show at The Water Rats and it was an absolutely cracking night.

When we arrived at the venue, they were still doing the soundcheck but we were still allowed to go in anyway.

We'd only been standing there about 10 minutes when the lead singer of The Pogue Trader's, Lou, came over. He'd added me to the Facebook group the day before and recognised me from my photograph. He was really nice and we chatted for about 10 minutes.

The show started about 8.15pm and there were two support acts, Comrade X and Anto Morra, both of them giving lively performances and are well worth checking out.

The Pogue Trader's came on about 9.30pm. They started with Streams of Whiskey, went on to If I Should Fall From Grace With God followed by a wide range of other Pogues songs.

If there was ever a Pogues copy band to see, this is the one. They have the right sound and everyone in the audience just can't help singing along or dancing. They are better than some of the other copy bands out there and it is easy to see why Andrew Ranken approves of them.

The venue wasn't totally packed, it was a Sunday and a lot of people would have been working the next day, but it was still quite a big audience even so and there were enough people there for the bar to run out of every beer they had except for lager.

After the show, we stayed on for a bit and talked to the accordion player, the banjo player (who had a slight look of Philip Chevron about him) and Lou again.

A very enjoyable evening. It was well worth taking the trip down from Liverpool to London to see.

I must have recorded at least ten songs. At some point, I'm going to upload them to the internet, if they've turned out OK that is.

here's the Facebook folder of photos from the gig.

if you got some and don't mind sharing them Heather email me them to londoncelticpunks@hotmail.co.uk
we were more than happy with the turnout in the end with it being a Sunday you'll always lose a few people but we nearly drank the bar dry so that must be a good thing!

we are in discussion with the venue to do it again. on either the direct anniversary of the Pogues first gig there in 1992 which is in October or another Christmas gig,

You're both burying the lead: Did you get a Kirsty?!

Also, sounds to have been an right proper show. Wish I could have been.
