Joe Strummer Tribute Songs

COMMANDANTE JOE

I guess in quite a lot of ways I grew up just like you
A bolshy kid who didn't think the way they told him to
You kicked over the statues, a roots rock rebel star
Who knew that punk was more than just the sound of a guitar
And I'll always remember that night at the Rainbow
When you wrote a soundtrack for my life, Commandante Joe.

So many bands back then were like too many bands today
A bunch of blokes who made a noise with bugger all to say
The Clash were always out in front, you put the rest to shame
Your words were calls to action, your music was a flame
You were our common Dante, and you raised an inferno
And you wrote a soundtrack for my life, Commandante Joe.

Reggae in the Palais
Midnight till six!
Rockin' Reds in Brockwell Park!
Sten guns in Knightsbridge!
Up and down the Westway
In and out the lights!
Clash City Rockers!
Know Your Rights!

I guess in quite a lot of ways I grew up just like you
A bolshy kid who didn't think the way they told him to
Like you I always knew that words and music held the key
As you did for so many, you showed the way to me
Although I never met you I'm so sad to see you go
'Cos you wrote a soundtrack for my life, Commandante Joe.

ATTILA THE STOCKBROKER

Stiff Little Fingers
STRUMMERVILLE
(Jake Burns)

You lit a flame in my heart
And it is burning still
And everytime I hear you shout
It still gives me a thrill
I can see you up there
With your right leg pumping

Chorus:
Goodbye inspiration
Voice of a generation
Goodbye Inspiration
I won't be playing Strummerville again

You wore your heart on your sleeve
With honesty and pride
You gave me hope, made me believe
That what I did was right
You brought out a passion
That had long been missing
Yeah, you brought out a passion
That you never stopped giving

(Repeat chorus)

(Repeat chorus)

And if music seems mundane
It's cos the companies got their way
And all the young bands seem to say
'Please turn our rebellion into money'

So thanks for giving me my creed
I'll try to stay on side
For helping me to dare to dream
After all this time
Cos I still see you up there
On a stage and playing
Yeah, I still see you up there
I still agree with what you're saying

(Repeat chorus)

(Repeat chorus)

Not going to play Strummerville again.
(Clash Clash Clash City Rockers)

Junkman's Choir - Hey Joe
Words by Davie Wiseman

Another life touched and another life turned, Hey Joe.
Another road travelled and another flame burned.
He stood up for the rights, against the things he thought were wrong.
And he changed a lot of peoples’ lives, with a three-minute song.

Are you going backwards? Are you going forwards? Are you taking over? Are you taking orders?

When I first saw him, he was standing on a stage.
Beltin’ out a rhythm, with a mic and a rage.
He played guitar fast, was a sound sensation.
No guitar pose overdose, just pure inspiration.

It’s not death or glory, or just another hard luck story. This world needs more of.

I’m just a sucker for a revolution rocker.
If the future is the forest then the present ain’t kosher.
Hey Joe, the spirit’s alive. We’ll keep a rocking and a singing each day. With the revolution rock and the rebel spell roll, and the songs of freedom from around the globe. Down the road…

“These are the lyrics to my song I wrote two days after Strummer's death and debuted at the Continental Clash tribute, "(I Come From) A Place Like Any Other." Yes, they are specifically about the impact the Clash and Joe had on me, but they are also (in a broader sense) about the enlightening and empowering properties of all great rock 'n' roll.” Tim Napalm

I knew what I wanted
But I didn't know how
To make a noise
That made some sense
Somehow

I heard somebody singing
It made all the difference
He showed me where
All the answers were hidden

And when the world said no
Rock 'n' roll said yes
And when the world said go
Rock said go west, young man
Go west, young man

I come from a place like any other

I wrote endless poison
About my lack of power
And practiced all my moves
In front of the mirror

I bought my first Fender
Used off some beggar
And went off
In search of the perfect error

I want to hear that sound
That burns louder than a guitar army
I want a life that burns
Burns louder than a guitar army
A guitar army

I come from place like any other

I want a life that burns
I want a life that burns right now
I want a life that burns
I want a life that burns right now
Now and forever

I come from a place like any other

TIM NAPALM

Joe Strummer (Philip Chevron)

from the Radiators from Space's "Trouble Pilgrim" album.

Stuart Pearce is on the line,
We're taking on the Argentine again;
But it's another false dawn for England
if he can't find the man to lead the line.
It's another false dawn for England,
he needs someone who is gonna shine.
And that's when I remember
the summer I spent with Joe Strummer,
I said that's when I remember
the summer I spent with Joe Strummer,
When we watched the World Cup together,
me and Joe and D.J. Scratchy.
We fell in love with Toto Schillaci
and played Afro-Cuban mariachi.
He can play guitar, be a registrar,
smoke a big cigar, build a repertoire,
sleep in a motorcar, fish a reservoir,
programme a VCR, be a Football star.

Hey Joe, a-rovin' we will go,
over from Cuba to Fallujah,
they're all eating Freedom fries.
Hey Joe, I miss you more than you could know:
it's not a world you'd recognize
and it still takes me by surprise.

And now the U.N. is on the 'phone -
America is going it alone again,
and it's a bad day for democracy,
it needs a sweeter tone.
Well, it's a bad day for democracy,
the world is in the danger-zone.
And that's when I remember
the summer I spent with Joe Strummer,
I said that's when I remember
the summer I spent with Joe Strummer,
We changed the world together
with a Fender Telecaster,
We were in bands that played it faster,
we were the masters of the ghetto-blaster.
He can play guitar, be a registrar,
smoke a fat cigar, build a repertoire,
sleep in a motorcar, fish a reservoir,
programme a VCR, be a punk rock Czar.

Hey Joe, a-rovin' we will go,
over from Cuba to Fallujah,
they're all eating Freedom fries.
Hey Joe, I miss you more than you could know:
it's not a world you'd recognize
and it still takes me by surprise.

And that's when I remember the summer
I last saw Strummer
I said that's when I remember
the last time I saw Joe Strummer.
And now the baby needs feeding
and the roof's leaking on my head.
Where's Joe when you need him?
Joe's brown bread.
But he can play guitar, be a registrar,
smoke a fat cigar, build a repertoire,
sleep in a motorcar, fish a reservoir,
programme a VCR, be a superstar.

Billy Childish & Musicians Of The British Empire- "Joe Strummers Grave",

Joe Strummer Grave is not so much a tribute but more like "Singing odes to Joe Strummer "

When i read the lyrics to the Radiators song, i thought they were kind of cheesy. When i heard them on the cd, i realized how wonderful a song it really was.

Anyway, i guess it's an anti-tribute, but i remember some punk song called Joe Strummer's Wallet that dissed him 'cause, you know, he managed to make money from his music. A total crime, don't you know. You're way more legit if you let the record label steal your publishing, or if you make sure you stay so obscure nobody ever hears your music. Ok, lemme google it...

It's by a group called The Sting Rays, on their album From the Kitchen Sink. Can't find lyrics, sorry. Probably not worth the bother.

My band's "Out of a Coma" is a tribute to the Clash

It goes like this:

Clash-Clash-Clash City Rockers!
Clash-Clash-Clash City Rockers!

I was a thirteen year old lookin' for answers
Dyin' in the head of a fuckin' mental cancer
Feelin' like a stranger in me old hometown
You know I felt like burnin' it fuckin' down

I was a thirteen year old with an elder brother
Didn't wanna rot, wanted to push further
His London Calling cassette in the stereo tape deck
Since that day on I never looked back

Yeah, hearin' that noise was my first ever feeling
Of waking me mind with someone friendly leadin' me
And when I saw that gig on the tellyvision
I finally took, I took me last decision

I became the bassist of a punk-rock band
Broken amps and me friends, rebel songs we sang
I became addicted to combat rock
I knew that day I would never stop
I give my music body, heart and soul
For that's the only way to play rock'n'roll
Listening to Tommy Gun, Stay Free and Koka Kola
I thank you for waking me up out of a coma

Out of a coma (Out of a coma) Out of a coma Out of a coma (Out of a coma)
Out of a coma (Out of a coma) Out of a coma Out of a coma (Out of a coma)

And when I heard you shouting White Riot
I knew that was a riot of my own
I knew that was a riot of my own
I KNOW THIS IS A RIOT OF MY OWN!

Out of a coma (Out of a coma) Out of a coma Out of a coma (Out of a coma)
Out of a coma (Out of a coma) Out of a coma Out of a coma (Out of a coma)
A riot, a riot, a riot of my own
A riot, a riot, a riot of my own
A riot, a riot, a riot of my own
A riot, a riot, a riot, a riot of my own!
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior
Shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back out and shout
"Let's have another round!"

Yes, he broke our heart, but better it be broken by an artist than a hack.

Redemption Song Video

Post Tue Apr 24, 2007 2:01 pm

I realize this isn't a tribute song per se, but I saw a video of Redemption
Song on a VH1 Classic Cover Songs. The video is a tribute to Joe.
It shows a mural being created in NYC (I think) and there are many friends of Joe featured inc. Steve Buscemi and Jim Jarmusch.
