Music From The Four Corners of Hell

Post Fri May 05, 2006 1:13 am

Can someone tell me all the musicians on Woods Band's release Music From The Four Corners of Hell? I downloaded it from iTunes and of course, no liner notes or musician credits.

Music From The Four Corners of Hell

that's why I don't want to start relying on digital music.

On the album "Music From The Four Corners of Hell", we have:

Paul Harrigan -- accordian, whistle, and uillean pipes
David "Sparky" Hughes -- electric bass, keyboards and backing vocals
Steve Browne -- drums, percussion and backing vocals
Dave Browne -- acoustic and electric guitars
Shane Martin -- lead vocals
Terry Woods -- mandolin, citern, bouzouki, 5 string banjo, acoustic guitar, concertina and backing vocals.

also...

Special Guests: Ronnie Drew -- vocals on "The Dublin Jack of All Trades".
Yvonne McMahon -- backing vocals on "The Spanish Lady".
Recorded at The Factory, Spring 2002. Engineered and mastered by Ivan O'Shea.
Produced by Terry Woods. Band photo by Sarah Woods.
Cover concept and graphic design by Oldtown. Additional sleeve design by Joanne Carberry.
Photos are reproduced by kind permission of the Old Dublin Society and the Civic Museum, Dublin.

On the back cover:

"I was born and reared in Golden Lane. We were just real poor and it was very old tenements. Our lane was called the 'Four Corners of Hell' because there was a pub at each corner, and a pub in the middle as well.'
May Hanaphy from
Dublin Pub Life and Lore by Kevin C. Kearns (Gill MacMillan 1996)

I don't have a scanner at home, so I can't show you what you're missing on the simple but beautiful insert and back cover. The old Dublin photos are of the old Guinness kegs lined up at the wharf, and of street scenes. A very nice shot of the band inside.

This is one of our favorites.

And mine. It's one of my all-time favourite albums, I guess. I really like "Love on Tillery", the re-working of the Pogues' lovely "Paris St. Germaine". And well, all the other tracks as well. :) It's a big pity they haven't recorded anything else.

Love on Tillery is Paris St Germain which the Pogues recorded, too. I really like Grosse Isle Lament, mighty mighty sound

The downside to downloading music!

Thanks Territa. Yes, this is a great album. I just wish I could hear Terry Woods sing more. I don't know if I can hear him at all. But his mandolin, cittern, concertina, bouzouki, banjo, etc, etc, etc, sound great.
Terry must like having Shanes as lead singers. 8)

I agree that this is a quality album. To be honest, I didn't expect it to be anywhere near that good, as I thought the songs Terry wrote for the Pogues were a bit hit and miss (I never could get into Rainbow Man or Six To Go). Does anyone know if a follow up album is planned?

What about The Gartloney Rats? If you can understand him in that song. And that song "Johnny"? I think it's called "Johnny". About a young lad joining the british army or something like that. Again I can't understand it. His vocals are again too low in the mix. His best work is "Young Ned..."

Has Shane Martin gone on to do any recording since this album? I really liked the guy's voice, but a few Google searches didn't get me information about what he's been up to since then.

He has been taken to Monto I think. (along with Fergal Scahill, Garry O'Meara, Connor Smith)

I was chatting to Shane Martin quite recently about the possibility of there being another Woods Band album and apparently they all sat down and spoke about it and because Music From The Four Corners of Hell album didn't sell that well, there are no plans to make a followup.

Shane and Sparky can be seen gigging around pubs in Dublin most days a week as far as I know.

I've just ordered this tonight off Amazon - £7.99. Bargain I hope.

How does it compare with the 1971 album? I think that's a blimmin masterpiece. Is "Music From..." as good as the self-titled one?
