Ron Kavana-Home Fire

Post Thu Feb 02, 2006 3:10 pm

This is a very informed board so if the information below is old news to you forgive me. Anyway, I have had Ron Kavana's Home Fire CD in my personal rotation since I discovered it in the mid-1990's. Terry Woods is an instrumental part of the CD which initially made it of interest to me and gives the disk legitimacy and quality. Terry Woods really shines on the harmonies on the tunes Barleycorn and Home Fire and, if I am not mistaken, provides great instrumental accompaniment to Kavana's songs. The CD has a strong pre-Good Friday republican bent to it which is a plus in my book. Young Ned is on the CD and several of the other songs follow the general theme. The CD is highly recommended in my book.

I found my copy on eBay a couple of years ago, and it gets played regularly. It's my favorite Ron Kavana album. It is very well produced, and is heavy on the more traditional instruments, all of which you can hear in the music.

(off topic)

Just occured to me that "Territa" COULD in fact be Terrys daughter hence the HER name.

Common out with the truth you.

Actually there are CDs for sale in HMV and virgin with 40 songs by Ron Kava "Irish songs of resistance, rebellion and peace" A lot of 'peace' rebel songs in it, but a couple of brilliant instrumental bits, especially Home Fire. Best ting about the CD IS the amount of original material, a blessing because all of the rebel CDs for sales these days have the same songs on it

What's the title? I'd like to add it to the collection...
Oh, and while I'm here, Ron and Terry are one of the "topics d'jour" over at the Christy Moore site... a great discussion of musical lineage and interrelationship. To which I felt compelled to add an expression of my love of Young Ned Of The Hill as a song. So, here and now, formally - THANK YOU Terry for one of the best damn 'rebel' songs I've ever heard. Maith thú!

I just looked up some Kavana CDs, and 'Everyman is a king' is on 'Think like a Hero' (1990). Hmmmm. Just listened to the (shitty quality) sample, and it seems to be along the lines of his version of 'Young Ned' (aka Not That Brilliant). Well, it's just a sample.

Couldn't find any ca 40 songs CD anywhere :(

Oh, and I'll second Fintan's THANK YOU, Terry.

He does a version of Kitty on the "1798..." album. And it ain't bad at all.

Does anyone know if the version of the track "Home Fire / Beyond The Pale" which is on Disc 2 of this album, is the version which Terry Woods plays on? He isn't listed in the credits.

I don't think Terry played on that double album. The only album of Ron's he guested on was Home Fire. But he co-wrote for others.

Thanks Alex. Didn't think he was on it as all the musicians are listed in the booklet, but thought I'd check. It's a great song either way.
