If The Pogues did a tour without shane with Spider on vocals how many people would go to see them?,Ive seen the band a few times now and not being a die hard fan of the band I get the impression the other members of The Pogues are just Shanes backing band and people are only interested in Shane.Surely the band know that Shane is there meal ticket and they would be nothing without him.What im trying to say is for example this tour the guitar player has been missing and another member missed a few shows and it didnt make a blind bit of differance, But if Shane was missing it wouldnt be as good.Just wondering what everyone elses thoughts are

Bit offensive to the rest of the band, surely? Each of the band are brilliant musicians in their own right. Do you think Shane writes the music?

I'd go and see The Pogues without Shane. I probably wouldn't go 3 nights in a row, or with as much excitement, but that's because they (presumably) wouldn't be doing all my favourite songs. I'd still go for the likes of Thousands Are Sailing, Tuesday Morning etc, and simply for the music, as it's class.

Would go you to a Shane MacGowan acapella gig? I might, but I'd say it would be brutal.

And no offence to that lad on the guitar, but I heard a good few people express their disappointment about the absence of Philip Chevron.

This is convoluted and, yes, offensive nonsense. What makes it The Pogues are the 8 people who answer to that name. If it is true that a Shane-less Pogues is a less desirable box-office draw, it is also demonstrably true that a Pogue-less Shane is also a less than primo attraction. If, as you say, you really do "get the impression" that the other members of The Pogues are "just Shane's backing band", your level of musical sophistication is quite shockingly deprived.

Like most fans here, I feel no need to defend the band.

I just wanted to say, one of the highlights for me is seeing the six musicians lined up on stage (with Andrew behind them) just playing away.
It is always a visceral thrill for me-beautiful music-the reason Repeal is always a highlight!!

Yeah, Shane's backing band .....virtually interchangeable with The Popes

The Pogues is the sum of talents of all the individuals in the band. In total, all together, on top of their individual and collective game, they are the greatest live band I have ever seen. I've seen them without various members at different times over the past 25 years; and the shows have always been good, but only truly great when they've all been there.

I did, and would still, go and see them without Shane.

The "guitar player" being absent makes significantly more than a blind bit of difference to anyone with ears. * Insert term of abuse of your own choice here.

Out of the Pogues discography, my favourites are pretty much all those that include MacGowan, but that's just because I prefer that style of music. There are certainly some gems that don't feature Shane.

new to these parts...so is this spring tour in 09 with or without shane? just curious. and although the majority of the pogues material is better with shane...years ago my old punk rock band used to cover modern world. that song kicks ass

Oh god here we go with the no Shane rumours ha ha. I think that there is an energy and a passion that Shane brings to the live gigs that cant be replaced however lets get this right he would be nothing without the guys. The pogues are the pogues and not shane mcgowan featuring the pogues. Lets put it this way. If u completely discount the last two albums (and im not saying u should by the way) could you fill a gig without shane songs and it still be a good gig??? Deffo. Thousands, train of love, young ned and misty morning to name a few are songs that are class and not written by shane.

Initially I'm annoyed by what you have written here, I realise your entitled to your opinion as is everyone who posts here, but you are acting in a childish manner by posting these opinions on a Pogues fan site, your just trying to provoke a reaction from people who are genuine fans, and you must know will totally disagree with what you've said.

I am a fan of The Pogues and not just Shane alone as every member of the band contributes to the sound, and Philip has contributed as much as anybody and he always was and always will be a vital member of The Pogues.

Funnily enough, this thread inspired me to go and give Waiting For Herb a proper listen, and I've found some great new songs. I always like Haunted, but Paris St Germain and Drunken Boat are pretty sweet too.

Not that there's any need to defend Mr Chevron here, I still want to do it. He is absolutely not hanging around here 'trying' to be important. To me, and I believe to many more, he IS important! He got my respect by being very open, about many things, even though he didn't need to. By being this honest he helped me cope with my views about my life and my 'problems'. I have to say that this has nothing to do with him being a pogue but the way he communicated with me.
The pogues are nothing without any of the members. It is a great miss that Philip isn't playing at the moment but it is so great he can do work like putting the box set together and so on! Without Shane in the 90's the pogues where still a great band.
On I side note, I do not like people talking negative about the elpees without shane... I absolutely love these albums, pogue mahone is just as important to me then any of the others....
