How about Lancaster County Prison for opening act in NYC for the 12th and 14th? Shane has worked with them before and they're right in Brooklyn.

i'd love to watch them outdoors. being drunk on the lawn would suddenly become more acceptable.

Yeah an outdoor show would be nice...but not in Boston or NYC or DC in March.

Washington DC question
(haven't been there in 20+ years except for rock concerts at RFK Stadium)

I booked a hotel through Hotwire (Dupont Circle area). (the places mentioned back on page 16 were a little out of my price range)

Per Google Maps, it's only 1 1/2 miles from the 9:30 Club.....directly west of, along U Street.

Is the area between the hotel and 9:30 Club safe to walk before/after the show?
If not, is it easy to get taxis or other public transportation/Metro at the 9:30 when the show is over?

(I'd like to avoid using my car)

Thanks

I booked my tickets for this last night - very excited - first time seeing the Pogues. I like the outdoor idea too, hope the weather is great. They say it's first come first served, even though when you buy the ticket you get a seat number, you'll just grab any seat  . I will try and get there early to secure a better place if I can!

It's a bit too far to really consider walking and the immediate area around the 9:30 Club, although improving, is a bit sketchy. You can take the Merto (DC's subway) there, but the last train out is at 11:50pm weekdays. Sucks, I know. They did extend the hours to 2:50am on Friday and Saturday nights, but since the shows are M-T-W nights, that won't help you. In years past, Mr. C has posted the set times, and I assume he will again. There is a good chance that the show will be over in time to get back to the station before the last train. If not, there are usually cabs available outside when shows let out.

There is a stop right at Dupont Circle ("Dupont Circle" on the Red line) and there's the ridiculously named "U Street/African-Amer Civil War Memorial/Cardozo" station on the Yellow/Green lines near the 9:30 - exit the easternmost side and you're three blocks away. You'll need to transfer lines at the Gallery Place/Chinatown station.

For those out-of-town folk, the Metro runs on farecards. You need to pre-purchase them and the fare varies depending on the distance traveled and has surcharges for rush hour (opening to 9:30am and 3-7pm). These fares are posted on the Kiosk where the attendant sits and on maps near the turnstiles. For the Dupont Circle-U Street ride, it is $1.35 regular and $1.65 Rush Hour. That is one-way, so the best thing to do is by 2x that amount to have the return fare already purchased so you don't have to deal with that when your trying to get back. Official time is 16 minutes, but pad that by at least 10 to be safe.

There is also a one day unlimited farecard for $7.80. A good deal if you plan on using the Metro on and off throughout the day: you won't need to keep calculating fares.

Metro's website is: http://www.wmata.com/index.cfm Ther also run the busses in DC, so the site has all that info as well.

What's the actual hotel address? Any 90-series bus (92, 96, etc.) will likely take you most of the way from the 9:30 to your hotel (they run along U St. to 18th, then turn north on 18th and run through Adams Morgan). U St. heading west from the 9:30 is pretty safe at night, especially if you're there on the 17th. The usual common-sense precautions apply, of course.

Thanks Doktor Avalance and EdThe Red - I'm going to look into all schedules.

The hotel is the Dupont Circle Hilton - 1919 Connecticut Avenue.
Seemed like a good price for a place closer to the venue. $89 while alot of other downtown is in the $200+ range.

Ah yeah, that's the Hilton where John Hinkley, Jr. shot Reagan, so hey, it's historical, even...It's also only about two blocks from where you'd catch the bus to take you along U St. to the 9:30. You're probably better off walking (it'll take you about half an hour, but there's lots to see along the way) or taking the bus to the club, then cabbing back...although getting a cab on St. Paddy's day might be problematic, in which case, well, there's always the bus.
