You can buy tickets on that smash-jpn site.

Shane is really going to sing, right?

I'm gonna get tickets, I'll be moving out of Japan a week after that, it makes a good going away party if it all goes well...

My spies tell me the Tokyo show sold out in ONE HOUR!!! And tickets have been changing hands on a Jp auction site for 250 dollars. Amazing. How come the Pogues are so massive in Japan?? It took the band a month or more to sell out Glasgow and Birmingham (similar size venue) last Xmas and these cities are Pogues heartlands, cities where Shane has kept the music alive over the intervening decade with regular shows, cities stuffed with 2nd generation Irish weaned on the music of the Pogues. But Japan????? All credit to the Japanese but what gives :) :P

Big in Japan

Post Mon Jun 20, 2005 5:44 am

Actually, the Tokyo gig sold out in less than 10 minutes! And I am one of those poor sods who ended up paying the equivalent of 200 euro for a ticket. But to address people's questions about what be givin' in the land of the rising sun, here are a few points. 1) the venue in Tokyo is not a concert hall, but a dance club. The capacity is quite limited. That is why there are still slews of tix left for the Osaka gig... it is a big venue. 2) yes, there is a decent Irish community here, and we tend to make a favourable impression on the locals who then get involved in the festivities. The annual Paddy's Day parade is huge. They close off Tokyo's poshest street for us, and about 80% of those there are Japanese... many of them with their tin whistles and bodhrans.

I just bought my tix for the Mother Hall show today. I'm in 7th heaven... feel like I'm seeing the Beatles or something! The Pogues are one of my few 80's idols that I never got to see live! Now, I'm working on converting my Japanese wife... she shouldn't be hard since she's into a lot of Asian and Latin bands that combine trad music with punk and rock.

Hey, James, who's gonna do the female vox on "Fairytale"? If you happen to be lacking a vocalist, there is a singer named Yoko Utsumi who is a fantastic singer, and has good English. She used to be with Japan's amazing Soul Flower Union (the most Pogue's-like band in Japan) and while they are primarily influenced by trad Japanese music, they also use a lot of Celtic music--she used to do a great bilingual version of "Foggy Dew" when she sang with Soul Flower Union. Soul Flower Union loves Ireland and has recorded some of their albums there--their female guitarist Hideko is married to Donnal Lunny (who now lives in Japan), I believe. Anyway, if yer interested, I could probably get an e-mail address for Yoko.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to whoever you get to sing "Fairytale."
