A couple questions from a newbie & what to wear to a gig

Post Mon Mar 17, 2008 6:53 pm

Hey everyone... i'm going to the show on thursday and i had a few questions as this is my first Pogues show. i was just wondering most of all what the atmosphere is usually like... do they interact with the crowd much? is the crowd typically older or younger? Will there be merchandise available at the show? (this one doesn't have much to do with the pogues but..) will the staff at the orpheum have make a fuss if i have my camera? this probably sounds weird, was just wondering. I'm going with my girlfriend... I have converted her to a Pogues fan too... she's also obsessed now, haha. Keep a look out for us, considering we'll probably be the only kids there (I'm 17, she's 16), hahaha... I'm really looking forward to it though!

Thanks for your help...

Cheers

Well, I went to the show last year at the Orpheum, and I am going again on Wednesday. I also saw them back in the day in Boston circa 1987, Joe Strummer was on guitar.

Since the venue is a theatre with seats, the crowd may be a bit subdued as they were last year. Let's hope not! I expect you will see all ages there form 50s down to 20s. I am in my early 40s.

I recall T-shirts were on sale, and beer, but you are too young for that. I hope you enjoy the show. I believe The Pogues are just about the best band going right now.

Jimmy is correct on many counts. Best band in the land - mixed crowd - 70% loaded, 30% formerly loaded - ton of merch avail from t-shirts/jackets/to scarfs.
Cameras not allowed. Bring a camera phone.
Don't wear a U2 shirt. It'll needlessly encourage drunks like myself to inquire how much of Africa you've helped save since their last tour ended.

I'm going to wear my Pogues shirt, haha... I'll reserve my comments though with that last part.

 I am beginning to think this show may not be suitable for my children. I trust there will be no nudity involved.

oh cock off, guys

nothing wrong with wearing a pogues shirt at a pogues show ... there will tons of 'em the other night in philly

what i do have a problem with is carefully selecting a t-shirt from another band to gain maximum indie cred

"OK, the cool people won't let me wear my Pogues shirt to the Pogues show, so let me wear my [insert cool indie hipsteer buzz band name that will dutifully impress u2larkin04 and philofbelloni] t-shirt so everybody will think i'm oh so hip and read pitchfork and listen to vampire weekend

come on

if he digs the pogues, wear a pogues shirt

All I know is that the 6'8" dude wearing the Maroon 5 tour shirt in front of me was farting all night. He also had zero interest in the show.

I too noticed a lot of farting. More than any shows I have ever been to.

I wore my Medusa t-shirt.

And though you didn't ask, ......Jameson is the answer.
What kind of fuckery is this?

At the risk of insulting anyone here (or anywhere else in the world for that matter), I have to agree with radioclash and phoist - wearing a band tee shirt to see said band falls firmly on the concert faux pas list. Buy a shirt at the show, of course (especially at a Pogues show, where there's plenty from which to choose and the price is actually reasonable). Wear it with pride thereafter, attracting envious stares and excited comments from onlookers. You may even make new friends (when I went to see Billy Bragg a couple of years back without a ticket, I got chatty with a guy outside who was wearing a Pogues shirt from the March '06 shows. Turns out he had a spare ticket). But no, don't wear a Pogues tee shirt to a Pogues show. And especially, don't, for heavens' sake don't, get to the show, buy your tee shirt, and then put it on right then and there. That's just unforgivable.

As for picking the right band shirt to show how cool you are - don't know about that. I generally wear non-band clothing to concerts but I did wear an old Smithereens shirt to the show last week, my favorite band (USA division!) and hardly the darlings of the indie crowd.

Besides, once the music starts no one will be looking at your shirt, and if you're at a GA venue it'll be soaked in beer three songs in. 8)
